Being new at this vending thing, I don't know if a two day event will work with the live stock people like me. I would be very nervous of a failure of the equipment when everyone is gone or the janitor unplugging something or blowing a fuse to find out that all your livestock is dead the next morning. I know that it would devastate me so I could not imagine the hit a large vendor would have.

If you did the 2 day event, it would be best in my eyes to have dry goods, lectures and work shops on day one, and then the frag fest on day 2 and have the livestock sellers maybe at one end and dry goods on the other.

Just my .02

i understand your fear, however, who would be in the booth the other day. the drygoods people would probably be there two days and many livestock people would too. maybe some could share the two days.

it would be a logistical nightmare for Kevin.

does the venue have insurance that would cover our loss if there were to be a power failure?

could we sleep in our booth next to the lulling sounds of the pumps?

Carl

No, I think the logical solution would be to leave all the equipment but take home the livestock for the night. Might be a bit of a pain but worth two whole days of sales without zoo-like conditions. just think of how many sales were lost from people who couldn't find a hole in the crowd to get to your booth

It looks like R-A-P is gonna give MACNA and IMAC a run for its money. I say go for it. :D

At least with R-A-P it will be local every year, and we won't have to travel to random states for MACNA.

I would not take anything home. I had a customer buy frags, then take his frags and family to Disneyland and drive back to Arizona the next day with the frags. I surely would not worry about frags overnight even if the power went out. If the tank had fish in it that would be a whole different story.

do you think if it was two days we would likely sell two times as much? or would we just pay twice as much and work twice as hard?
would there really be twice the number of attendees?

No, there would NOT be double the people in attendance, but you WOULD see double the people in aggregate. Does that make any sense?
Look at it this way: Did you see all 2,000 people last Saturday? No way, not a chance. too busy. but you did see maybe a few hundred, yes?

Ok, so for the second day, do you need to see an entirely new group of 2,000 different people to make additional sales? of course not! You'll see a few hundred more new faces from the same group as before. The significant difference is time and exposure to your customers.
Will you see Double the sales? probably not ...realistically you could expect 60-70% in additionial sales. LOL, are you going to pass up the change of getting an additional 2/3 revenues from a killer sales opportunity? Heck no!

Also remember the incremental labor involved with moving/transporting for a second day is nill.

I also think $5 is way too little for admission. at least $10-15 next time. i paid more than that for a corn dog that lasted 3 minutes and didn't look half as nice.

$10-15 will not detern people who really want to come spend their money and if their were a bunch of speakers like IMAC has then there might be two addmissions. one for the shoe and one for the lectures.

I couldn't agree with you more!

I had a great time and picked up some great corals. It was a pleasure helping out on this one Kevin and I am looking forward to next year. I can even get you a bigger screen if we need it!

Maybe to give all the hobbyist farmers a chance to sell. Sell smaller booths for 2 different days one to come in on Sat. and a new fresh face for Sun. This way more non-commerical farmers can come in and the attendees can have a second round of farmers to visit rather than the same people.

I would like to see it become bigger then MACNA or IMAC. I can see it happening as long as it doesn't cost $100 for admission like the big shows.

There was a hobbyist only fragging area, it was cancelled due to lack of interest by hobbyist farmers. There were many hobbyist only farmers there. We tended to get together in combined booths to make the costs reasonable.

As for RAP becoming bigger than MACNA or IMAC..... What in you mind constitutes bigger? RAP already had an attendance the was arguablely close to MACNA and IMAC combined attendance.

Once again, I'd like to thank Andy from OCEAN IN MOTION for providing nearly 4,000 gallons of Scripps saltwater for Reef-A-Palooza! His generosity and support helped to make this event a complete success! Please join me in a huge, virtual, HipHipHorray for one hell-of-a-guy!....thanks Andy for all your help!

For those of you who never got the chance to meet Dave Morris, please allow me to introduce him (he is kinda one of those "behind the scenes" guys who never get full credit for what they do)
Well, Dave contacts me a few weeks before RAP and completely and unconditionally volunteers to run our audio/video production for the presentations. Not only that, but he volunteered to supply all the professional equipment for RAP, free of charge!
Some of you may not have noticed, but the screen, projector, system management, etc. were all supplied by Dave.
DAVE, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TAKING THAT EXTRA STEP FOR ALL OF US! RAP WAS THAT MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE FOR EVERYONE AS A DIRECT RESULT OF YOUR EFFORTS!
THANK YOU!

We attracted over 2,000 people for this one-day event...this is unprecedented!

Over 2000? Awesome! RAP08 has a lofty goal, and with the help of the RAP08 volunteers I hope they'll be able to meet or exceed those attendance numbers!

You deserve an annual expo for the marine hobby... convention/conference/swap/trade/consumer show, whatever you want to call it.
I WANT TO BLOW THIS THING EVEN BIGGER! THIS SHOULD BE A TWO DAY EVENT, IN A LARGER BUILDING, MORE SPEAKERS, MORE VENDORS, MORE GIVEAWAYS, YOU NAME IT...
IF YOU GUYS SUPPORT IT THEN THE SKY'S THE LIMIT!
:)

I agree. THIS thing SHOULD be blown EVEN BIGGER! An even bigger and better RAP08! All the suggestions that were made for RAP08 should help make it even better.

:D

RAP is a great tradition and I'm happy to see it grow as the years go on. I am happy to see RAP fulfill it's goal of education, camaraderie and furthering the vision and mission of SCMAS.

Here's to a great RAP08!

Did RC just lag big time for a post to show up 2 months later?

lol jk

Although RC does lag from time to time, no, it wasn't them this time.

I was just going through some of the suggestions that were made for RAP 08 and saw this post. I thought the suggestion to make RAP bigger/better/improved was a good one, so I thought I'd reiterate that.

Not sure that a 2 day event makes a lot of sense, however that's something I'm sure the RAP steering committee will hash out.

Another suggestion might be to have a previously established accounting method, though, that way there won't be any questions as to how much was made from the vendors, raffles, admissions or expenses.

Again, their committee will handle that, I'm sure. They have the wisdom gained from having things handled poorly last time, so...

Little detail as to what will be this year, though, so the developments should be interesting...

We have gone from NONE to now TWO premier shows for the west coast, right here in our own backyard! (one in April and one in October) Even better, it looks like both shows are going to be two day events.

All politics aside, this a great time to be a reefer in Southern California!

:)

But I thought your PRIVATE event was "THE" "PREMIER " event?

You keep telling people that you are putting on the private event so that the hobby can get more exposure.

It couldn't get the same exposure as a continuation of RAP?

Of COURSE it could...

Or is it that you feel the need to line your pockets takes greater precedence?

RAP was SUPPOSED to be entirely voluntary and SOLELY on behalf of the club. Or did you forget that? Conveniently?

And although not very large at this point, we also have the Coral Farmers Market in February. Don't count that event out, either...

I'd consider CFM & RAP "Premier" events.....................

Not sure how one can call an event "Premier" when it hasn't even taken place before........................it may just fall flat on it's face.......... :eek2:

Ahh yes, sorry folks, I totally forgot....
Coral Farmer's Market is in February and from what I can tell, will be bigger and better than ever!

Wow, so now we've got February, April and October filled with huge events. This is simply amazing!

Captain Quirk,
the distribution of proceeds is hardly any of your business.
Do you question where the proceeds for CFM go...or any other business for that matter? Your behavior is highly inappropriate so please refrain from flaming every post I make. Please!
