Reef Cam Help

Do you like Phil Collins?
Hey, I have been wanting to set up a reef cam online so i can keep an eye one my reef when on trips vacation exc...

I have seen that alot of people have them on here and i was wondering what are you using to uplink it and encode the signal. And can you link it to any free webpage or do you have to have a special web service.

I'd like to know more about this as well.. I'd like to get some kind of cam on mine or at least my aquacontroller for me to check while I'm at work.

yeah me to, i was thinking about doing this to watch my tangs swimming while i am at work. someone out there let us know something.

I've used a ton of apps. I spent a lot of time researching. Then well I didn't have a computer with my tank and I was to busy. The best answer more then likely can be found at http://www.webcamxp.com/
If it works well buy it. Like with any software. If they did a good a job writing the program and you appreciate the work done help support the people that made it. Use the 21 day trial, works well buy it.
I can tell you now the biggest problem most people will run into is firewalls and getting through security on your machine in windows, on routers, and things your internet service provider has done.

MSN messenger will allow you to show your webcam to one other person, but wouldn't help you if you couldn't accept the invite from home and work at the same time. There was another app I think was Microsoft's I used a long time ago. It was for direct ip chat, but again that was for like chatting type stuff, not really for serving the cam on the net.

i downloaded the webcamxp and the program works great but somthing is blocking it i have windows firewall turned off but i tried it with mcafee on and off still won't work

i have cable modem and a wifi router but im directly connect to the router not over wirless. also i should have any problems with connection speed i have a100meg connection

LOL, I love how people get sold on wireless high speed devices. Get a high speed router with your high speed connection. Most peoples net connections 3mbps if they are very lucky, the slowest wireless is 11mbps and thats to old to even be sold anymore. People spend extra money to not lose speed when they already have overkill. What type of router is it? Check the manuals for it.

Besides webcam software,
You will also need a static IP to serve up your webcam.
If you dont have one, (and most residential DSL or cable-modem dont), then you will need to use a Dynamic IP updater servicer like no-ip.com or DYNDNS.com. This will allow you to have a consistant domain name like myfishwebcam.no-ip.org or something like that.

I have a mac and use EVOCAM software. It's pretty good and works, I'm sue there are a tonne of PC programs that do the same thing.

look off webcamxp's site, there was links to a forum that talked about one once. sorry I'm a little busy to find it for you. but yeah Chrismo has a good point, I had forgotten about that

if you havent got the camera yet, just buy a DLink network camera, hook it direct to you firewall/router, and watch your log to see what ip it pulls. then set port 80 and 5003 to forward to your network camera's ip address in your advanced/games/DMZ settings in your router. (the camera also supports custom ports in case your ISP has blocked port 80) This way there is no software you have to use on your pc, your pc doesnt even have to be on. Great for us laptop users... USe a dynamic DNS to foward a name to your routers dynamic IP address. Dlink supports this config and includes a step-by step guide with the camera.

Here is what you need:

1) the camera

2) as was stated before a static ip and/or a service to work around this (dyndns is the best cause it's free :))

3) A way to work around your ISPs firewall...(Most if not all ISPs block standard ports because they don't want people serving content via their network, but there are ways aroudn this).

There are two options. If you want to do a wireless model Linksys makes one that works great. Your going to find you can get a good cam that is not wireless for around $25 or a wireless for more then four times that. If your not getting the Linksys you want Logitech. Logitech products are by far the best and there cams rule the market. Many cams in the past had problems with drivers between different peoples computers and were a pain to get to actually work. Logitechs work for many many years and are top quality.
