Reef Club Meeting

Oh Its SUNDAY! I thought we said Sat. yesterday when we talked but now that I think about it you may have just said "weekend". Hmm, I may not make it then. Depends if I can sneak away. I will try my best but don't pull any pork just for me!

my wife and I plan to join the club here soon now that we got some extra time and a tank again after a little break. I was just wondering if there is a certain topic for each meeting or are most meetings mainly gatherings to discuss whatever we want and socialize ? just wondering since we have never been to any club meetings...

In the past we have had topics on occasion -- but mostly not. I think topics is a great idea. Once the elections are out of the way, I think we can concentrate on setting this year's schedule for monthly meetings. We can see how topics fly with that. I was thinking we could have people volunteer or sign up for particular topics, and also have people sign up to host meetings. We could then try to match up topics and meetings with peoples schedules. I was also thinking that we might try for a regular weekend every month -- like maybe "the third saturday" or something like that. That way people could plan ahead. Anyway, here are some potential topics that I think might be interesting for club meetings:

Quarantine Tanks
Skimmers
Lighting
Care of fish
Care of SPS
Care of LPS/Softies
Sumps and plumbing
Salinity and Salinity Measurement
Refugiums and Nutrient Export
Calcium, Alkalinity, and Magnesium in the Reef Aquarium
Aquarium Controllers
Kalk Reactors and Calcium Reactors
Flow in the Reef Aquarium
Water Quality (RO/DI, Tests of Water Quality)
Salt Water Basics (Nitrogen Cycle, Live rock, Setting up a first tank)
Filtration (LR, Bioballs, Mechanical, ...)
Carbon and Phosban
Responsible Reefkeeping

Anyway, I think topics are a great idea, and sometime soon we need to set up this years schedule. If there is enough interest in topics, hopefully we can incorporate them into the meetings as a set thing.

yeah, I like the topic idea as well....the last meeting I held was so very casual, we all just sat around and talked fish stuff of recent need, whatever we had questions with, it was actually a nice meeting to answer each other in person, so that is what I have planned for this one...was for everyone to just kind of have something in their heads they needed help on, or had a question....kind of thing! Hope that is ok with everyone...I figure it is nice to have alot of people around that can answer stuff in person than wait for the PM to come.....:D

Woot I should be able to come :)
How about some name tags so new people can get to know everyone easier? Also.. I would actually like to compare refractometer readings. If people can bring theirs I would like to see how "off" mine and others maybe are.

Woot

Reminds me of when I used to play counter strike! W00T!

Re the refractometer, I'll try and remember to bring mine. Kaine, C_stowers, and I have been working through some issues related to accurate readings for salinity from a pinpoint meter, and from refractometers. So far we've had some confusing results. We still have a few more tests to do, and then I was going to run the stuff by Randy Holmes-Farley. Then I thought I might include that in a salinity measurement topic at a future meet.

I can bring my REFRACTO. I think it might be a little on the high side though. Be nice to see if it is?

Topics are good....I need to learn more about SPS coral myself...

:D

Ok everyone......looking forward to the meeting...if anyone is not clear with the directions, feel free to PM me....
Gonna have some delicious pulled pork sandwiches (I make 'em good!) and macaroni salad, chips and beans...if anyone wants to bring anything sweet to eat for dessert feel free....I also have just coke products, so hope this works for your Sunday din din!! We are so looking for some good fellowship and the usual nerdy talk all about our fish, that no one else outside these things ever understands what you say.....so see everyone tomorrow and drive safe!

I ended up with a nasty cold so i was not able to make this one, plus i didnt want to get everyone else sick. I will catch everyone next time. Did anything good happen?

we had a great meeting, I am sorry you could not come, check the other threads for some info on a new filter pad available......lots of people, good food, so hopefully you will make the next meeting.
