my wife and I plan to join the club here soon now that we got some extra time and a tank again after a little break. I was just wondering if there is a certain topic for each meeting or are most meetings mainly gatherings to discuss whatever we want and socialize ? just wondering since we have never been to any club meetings...
In the past we have had topics on occasion -- but mostly not. I think topics is a great idea. Once the elections are out of the way, I think we can concentrate on setting this year's schedule for monthly meetings. We can see how topics fly with that. I was thinking we could have people volunteer or sign up for particular topics, and also have people sign up to host meetings. We could then try to match up topics and meetings with peoples schedules. I was also thinking that we might try for a regular weekend every month -- like maybe "the third saturday" or something like that. That way people could plan ahead. Anyway, here are some potential topics that I think might be interesting for club meetings:
Quarantine Tanks
Skimmers
Lighting
Care of fish
Care of SPS
Care of LPS/Softies
Sumps and plumbing
Salinity and Salinity Measurement
Refugiums and Nutrient Export
Calcium, Alkalinity, and Magnesium in the Reef Aquarium
Aquarium Controllers
Kalk Reactors and Calcium Reactors
Flow in the Reef Aquarium
Water Quality (RO/DI, Tests of Water Quality)
Salt Water Basics (Nitrogen Cycle, Live rock, Setting up a first tank)
Filtration (LR, Bioballs, Mechanical, ...)
Carbon and Phosban
Responsible Reefkeeping
Anyway, I think topics are a great idea, and sometime soon we need to set up this years schedule. If there is enough interest in topics, hopefully we can incorporate them into the meetings as a set thing.
