Reef Crystals "Recall"

It's not a recall per'se but check your CA and MG values.
I guess a bad batch got out of IO and it's impossible to track because they don't have batch numbers on buckets.

It's not going to kill anything but many people are reporting Ca at 380 and MG at 1100
So Drs foster and smith are sending supplements to boost these numbers up if you have a bad bucket.

Here's the thread I found this on..

Just a heads up..

Do they know if this was like a batch from a month ago, or how long? I ordered 2 buckets from them back in Oct/Nov...

Not a clue..
Just passing on info I found...
It's easy to test, so on your next water change, test CA and MG

The problem is what is considered "low" Ca and Mg? I ordered something like 6 or 8 bucket of RC in the past year from DFS. I haven't tested water from a bucket lately, but they are usually in the 380-390 Ca and 1100 Mg. I only found one post on Reef Central where I posted numbers. I may still have numbers from other buckets written on the lids. But I remember all of them being about the same on every bucket. So is this considered low?

Reef Crystal. Here's a reading of reef crystal without any additives:

CA = 390
Mg = 1130
Alk = 10.6

I usually add DowFlake and MagFlake to bring my Ca up to 420ppm and Mg to 1350ppm. But straight out of the bag, the parametere is pretty good.

Darn, I just bought three buckets.

I was going over my notes from David Cripe's talk. He works at Monterey Bay Aquarium. They pipe natural salt water (NSW) in. He commented that the numbers you see for NSW published in most books are high. His numbers were...

Alkalinity: 7 dKh
Ca: 380 ppm

:D

I think someone once posted that RC gave 400 Ca and 1350 Mg and everyone took that as gospel. The typical readings are listed on one of those threads about RC and it is a very wide range.

I have 3 or 4 buckets, but I'm not going to worry about it.
