Reef Crystals - The results are in...

gordon, I do not believe you are actually mixing to 1.025

How do you measure s.g and what do you use to calibrate your refractometer if you use one ?

I was using ocrean pure pro salt prior to these new reefcrystal salts and the reason that I switched from ocrean pure pro to reefcrystal was because I purchased a small bag of reefcrystal salt from petsmart a year ago and have good result (coral growth). But, at that time, I was having the same issue with low mag and calcium too. Not a big deal as I am using mag buffer to up the mag and turbo calcium to raise the cal level.

Last week I made 2 new batches of saltwater using Reef Crystals and found the calcium a little higher than normal for this salt. I ordered the salt from Drs. Foster and Smith on May 29th. I mix the bucket of salt before use and calibrated my refractometer with new Pinpoint 53.0mS calibration fluid. I always mix the salt to 35ppt. The calcium level is between 500ppm to 520ppm using 3 different test kits. The alkalinity tests out at 12dKH. My old bucket of Reef Crystals salt tests at 400ppm-420ppm for calcium using the same test kits. I haven’t tested the magnesium yet for the new bucket of salt.

WOW! Now that's interesting!

Well I thought I would post the results of my newest bucket of RC.

79 degrees
1.026
CA 405
MAG 1320
ALK 8?

Looks ok besides the alk I wish that was a little higher.

Spleify

Reef Crystals tends to be on the higher side (usually dKH of ~12). I'm surprised its actually that low... try double checking it.

After using up my old buckets of reef crystals I'm pleased to report my new bucket (1 of 2) tested much better.
Ordered from Dr foster&smith early last week here are my results:
Temp: 78deg F
Sal: 35ppt ( newly calibrated refractometer using new bottle pinpoint 53.0ms fluid)
Alk: 11dkh (Elos test kit)
Cal: 425 (Elos test kit)
Mag: 1300 (Elos test kit)

Now thats more like it!

It's very strange?? I have mixed up three different batches of this new bucket and I am gettin 6-7dkh, on 2 different test kits.

I have another kit on order, should be here in a couple of days, I will recheck it when it comes in.

I ordered another API test kit, as they seam "fairly" reliable, and very easy to use. I heard they were a lot like the Elos kits, any truth to this?

I got some new RC salts about 1 month ago from DFS and here are my results:

Sal: 35ppt
Alk: 10.75dkh (Salifert)
Cal: 445 ppm (Salifert)
Mag: 1470 (Salifert)

Well, allowing for some test noise, it looks like Reef Crystals is finally back to normal. Good to here. :)

Hear. ;)

Came across this thread today. Never knew this was going on. Just opened a new bucket of RC and had 25g of fresh water mixing for my weekly change so figured I'd test it. Came out to...
Ca 420
Mg 1320
both using Salifert kits. Seems fine to me. :)
