Reef dosing and the aquamedic pumps

I am actually getting ready to purchase the same pump (for the same reason:) )

I have a friend who has the triple version. He uses it for his top off water, plus the two part dosing. Each channel can be set to it's own dosing rate.

He's had it for over a year and no problems at all so far.

I use these. Work great. Can't beat the price. I have timers that can be set for one minute. I find out how much it pumps in one minute and dilute the solution appropriately. A whole lot cheaper. But, if you've got the money, might as well get something more sophisticated, just giving you another option.

I use the AquaMedic Single for my top off and I love it! My LFS uses them on a lot of their systems, that is why I bought mine, very easy to use. I am considering getting the dual to dose a two part but I only have a 58 and the tank doesn't require much of A and B.

I have been using the aquamedic auto top off dosing pump for about 6 months and have been very happy with it. Not cheep but a cool gizmo...

i bought the aquamedic and returned it. It made a clicking sound ever second when the motor would turn. I ended up buying the nautilis 2 instead, should be here friday.

I might as well rock the boat and say that I am not totally happy with my aquamedic. I run it through a kalk reactor and have a tank to hold ro/di. When the tank gets low the pump does not work, A way to fix this may be to have a float switch on the water revisor to keep the ro/di full. Possibly the 3 feet of head pressure is too much for this pump. As stated the pump will most likely add too much top off water if you run it all day, this is fixed by adding a timer, but I would really like to have a very steady slow kalk drip vs. a faster intermittent drip. Other than these two complaints it works fairly well. I really do not think there is many other choices at this price point.

thanks guys......

A question though. The dual doser comes with the timer that can be adjusted.....does it lose its programing after a black out. Also are they prone to failure like ordinary digital timers??

I believe it will retain the programming, but you need to reactivate it after a power loss by pressing a few buttons. I ordered mine today from marinedepot (found out after I paid that they are backordered though:mad2: ) so I'll let you know when I eventually get it. It may be that a UPS would alleviate this.....

Should have went with Premium Aquatics like I usually do...... don't know what I was thinking.... DOH!

Hi SPStoner

After a power loss will the unit stop dosing until it is reactivated by pressing a few buttons ?

because if during a power failure and I happen to be away from home for a week that will mean ... a disaster in the making ...

Yep. Happened to me. It acts like you just plugged it in. I ran 4 days without any dosing until I noticed it. Luckily didn't lose anything.

crappy that they need to be restarted......Im gonna have to tie it in to my UPS then....so do they need to be reprogrammed everytime as well??

Does anyone know if there have been failures to the timing device??

I plan on using one of these and putting my ca reactor and kalk reactor on the self for a while....if I like it I'll just sell the reactors and go with the dosing method.

I've been looking into these a lot lately. I think a few people in this thread are confused between the reef doser and the sp3000 pump? The sp3000 isn't controllable out of the box.

From what I have read the reefdosers do need to be reset after an outage, but not reprogrammed. This maybe a safer option. On a UPS you would still be dosing during a power outage into a sump that probably isn't flowing to the tank.

Only other issues I've read are that the pump only uses 2 rollers around the hose where most peristaltic pumps have 4 rollers. Some people claim they can stop where no roller is holding the tubing causing them to siphon. I've looked at one in the box at the LFS, and the do ship them now with check valves for the tubing to prevent this.

The spectrapure liter meter 3 sounds like a much easier to use option, but the cost is more than double for dual channel setup.

oh I agree the litre meter looks nice...but expensive.

Your right..the pump when hooked up to a UPS will dose over a power outage....never thought about that.

The syphon issue is not a big deal if you keep the output hose above your tanks water line...nothing to syphon then.

"Does anyone know if there have been failures to the timing device??"

I've installed 5 of them, 1 DOA (unprogrammable), and 1 failed(scrambled brains, no dosing as it was reseting itself aswell)

I have one and I really like it.But I don't like it shutting down after a power outage. I'm wondering if you could hook it up to a battery back up for a computer. Our power outages don't last to long.

Yinger: Let us know how the Nautilus compares to the aquamedic. I've been wanting to get a doser for awhile now, and my future semester abroad is going to necessitate this since I don't want to leave dosing to other people, just feeding/etc.

Does anyone top off with two part though? I would think that if it is diluted properly, this should be possible. The reason I ask is that I have 50lbs of dowflake left haha.

will do, it should be arriving any minute right now. I'm excited. Still have to go get some tubing for it. But i'll let you guys know how's compare to the aquamedic. Keep in mind i only had the single channel sp3000. Not sure how the dual doser ones work, but I'd rather have a consistent drip rather than one on a timer.

I have the nautilis 2 setup now and I love it. Keeps the sump at a consistant level. I'm using it to dose kalk into my tank right now as well. Very easy to setup and very quiet, unlike the clicking of the aqua medic.

Do you have it hooked in with a float switch or is it set to replace based on your evap rate? Oh and what are you drawing the water from?

I bet I could use it as a top off and as a doser for two part if I dilute enough tho..
