Reef Essentials

I only have 11 of the listed essentials - my corals don't know that they are missing out on a sump filled with whiz bang equipment, they think they are living in a high tech reef system......

OMG!! Out of the 43 "essentials", I seem to have less than 10 of them!! LOL!!! I guess the reef tank and I didn't know they were essential, since I still enjoy the tank and it has been growing well for over 3 years.

I think this thread is more about "maybe good to have" rather than "essential".

The Jury is not out on LED's. Like with any lights you need to "learn your lights" to avoid the issues you speak of. LED's are here to stay. MH has many advantages but for the purpos of this thread ("save you money in the long run") LED's save you money in the long run. Probably the only advantage over MH except no radiant heat....

Leak detection is a must of you are doing less maintenance your gonna not notice something...

I agree on the chiller. Dont know how people dont have them.

I am a tad confused how black or grey PVC does much of anything to save me noney in the long run. It just looks better...

Direct Sunlight? Gonna spend alot of time scraping the glass... Not saving me money or maintenance in my book...

#27? Echotechs? I have them but I am not sure how they are saving you money in the long run. Their life expectancy is no better than tunze but they are several times the price.

Bare bottom or live sand is a choice... Not sure how one saves you money or maintenance over the other...

I use to do live sand and switched over to barebottom, the amount of detritus that accumulates on barebottom is amazing. The snail poop is most of it. So before the live sand would hide the detritus or where live rock touches bottom. Over time it will lead to greater maintenance issues. The vortechs or similar efficiency pumps save in the long run. I use to buy sub par pumps eventually end up breaking down or other issues. Flow levels would deteriorate over time. Could be impeller issues and crud getting inside.

Lighting, I have radions and AI's.. I do notice growth with LEDs the colors aren't intense could just be a learning curve for them. All my tanks have flatworms..they aren't smothering corals yet. Pretty much every LFS has them on their corals. And it's just a matter of time before your corals end up with them.

Lot of the stuff is not truely essential, black PVC just looks nice.

The tanks I've seen with direct sunlight are amazing. Direct sunlight seems to create robust growth. Again not truely needed.
