We have always like Bob Fenner The Conscientious Marine Aquarist.
I agree. There are also a couple of pocket guide books by Scott Michael
Scott Michael's newer books on families of fish are great! Like the Angels and butterflies book, damsel book, wrasse book, and basslet book.
Also Wittenrich's breeder's book is a great reference for pairing different fish and raising them. Many people still believe lots of fish can't be kept with their own species.
Kiysohi Endoh has a great book on angels.
Rudie Kuiter has a great series: one on angels, one on butterflies, one on fairy wrasses, one on surgeonfish, and one on seahorses. Like someone else said they don't offer much on captive care, but are great references for size and different species. With lots of interesting facts.
I also just picked up the Hawaiian Reef Fishes book by John P. Hoover and it is also a great resource.

It's too bad that Fenner and Calfo never got around to releasing Vol. 2 of their Reef series. It was supposed to be a multi-volume series of books with the first one being invertebrates then fish then corals. I have spoken to both of them about it and they just said the first one was not a very profitable venture and Calfo had other things planned out. Oh, well.

Also if you just want to look online you could check out reeffrontiers they have a good section on fish and inverts

The wait is so frustrating... I want to know about the gobies and the tangs now! I have read each of the volumes cover to cover.
If you are interested in a book on corals, I'd suggest Borneman's book, although it would be outstanding if a new edition would come out (as some corals that were only touched upon have become really popular since it was written.)
+ 2 on Borneman's work. I want an update, half the stuff we keep now is BARELY mentioned!
The wait is killing me, I just got Wrasse volume a few weeks ago & have nearly worn the binding out already. ( Re. Reef Fishes)
I'm thinking of getting vol. 1 for my birthday on thursday, though I just lost my job ( sucks, but Ces't le vi..) so I will be more strict with the cash for the forseeable future..

I read The Consciencious Marine Aquarist when started the hoby, so not appreciated to its real value. There are just good comments about this book, so it is a sure good guess. In fact, even if I have many specialised reefing books, I just ordered it this morning.
I haven't read the new version, but the old one was definitely out dated and I haven't opened it in years jhawkor. I think you are better off getting books that specialize in something. Like I like books that deal with different varieties of fish, I have a few coral books, and I have The Reef Aquarium Vol. 3, which talks about different setups and tank maintenance and I think it is one of the most valuable books I have had as far as setting up a tank, definitely worth the price.
