Reef Keepers in Albuquerque?

Thank you W.D. I have no idea where I am going with this.
moonpower I understand what you were talking about.
If we all frag we all benefit. Should have fraged out when
all was good. That way if things go wrong some one has
your back. Club members. friends NMOK you know.
All the best dbr.

LOL...

Ok, I have a bit of brainstorming and thanks to recent feedback; my thoughts may have been turned into a reality. Damage control is upon us.

It seems that many of us who have expressed our "concern" over the conditions at some of the LFS in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho have led us into a SMALL predicament. Basically, there are some that have reservations about helping out a group that won't help them back.

Let’s squash that right away, when it comes down to a NEED, we do have options. I know I have purchased items and services from just about every LFS in this state. If somebody calls me and needs salt NOW, I will tell them every LFS in their area, that’s because I am looking out for the animals.

Are there better options if it’s not so critical? Maybe, just remember that’s a personal preference and we, as a group has to be open to. As an example, I like Liveaquaria, some like Clarks, some like critters, etc... It’s their choice, and I am all for it as long as the bottom line "Life and well being" is being sought.

As I said in the last meeting, we do need the support of the community for us to help. If we are narrowed down to one avenue (which doesn’t exist right now), It’s hard to maintain our momentum.

My proposal:
Flyers is a great idea to get the word OUT, but to redeem ourselves as a resource, I propose a NMOK Marine newsletter that we can hand out to the LFS as well. In the newsletter we can offer reviews, tips, tricks, a list of LFS, Newbie orientation, species compatibility, Tank of the month, as well our information. This will show our commitment to the lfs as well as to the community. Also, in the newsletter we could offer a "Frags" section where individuals could go online, post up any frags they have available, etc... The most important item here is to remain unbiased towards any one LFS.

Option 1 (Ledger / Tabloid): It adds some cost for the paper and printing but I think we could scrounge up the resources. I have a HP Duplexing printer that will print Ledger / Tabloid and I think we could fit everything on one sheet double sided (which gives us 4 printable pages)

Option 2 (Letter): If we wanted to a bit cheaper, we could use a standard page folded in half for 4 HALF pages. Especially in the beginning that would probably work fine.

As for content, we can use our own or just paraphrase hot topics found on the web such as Randy’s 2 part Calcium / Alk supplement, or Test kits, lighting comparison, Pumps, Bare Bottom, DSB, IMAC Coverage, coral growth rates, proper tank params, Refuge's, etc... The list is endless and we can get information pretty easy to fill the pages. To get fancy, on the cover page we could display the tank of the month (or quarter) in color to show the tank in its full glory.

Just an idea. Let me know what you think and if it’s a go, I will start on a prototype and possible templates.

This sounds fiery and I don't mean it to be, nor do I direct any of this at you!!! :) I humbly propose a twist on your idea! :)

I think the newsletter is a great idea. I would hope that LFS's would consider adjustments to their maintenance routines or conditions in order to promote healthy and humane living conditions and possibly work together with us to do so. I could get behind that and would fully support them in any way we could.

I can't get behind any group that doesn't care for their life forms whatever they may be. There is no excuse for it and I feel very strongly about the issue.

:) :) Eric agrees and though we are just two people I think as a marine keeping and supporting group we should be willing to take a stand against poor conditions. That's part of what we are here for. Eric and I are in support however of having the conversation with any LFS and create a change even if it's a minor one and would participate in that conversation. I know we have been very vocal about this maybe it's time we shut up and listen to what others have to say.

I also understand what you're saying here and it is important may I propose that we do the newsletter and encourage a change in our LFS's. I saw in the other post that GreenUku linked to that our local Museum is going to the Denver Reef Club to get their livestock. I know we just got started but I think we need to step up to the plate and encourage our LFS's to improve their conditions for the community not just accept it because they can advertise for us. Maybe they will listen to us (though I understand it may not be likely) and expand their products as well so that we aren't going to the internet for anything other than our basics.

This is my humble opinion and I encourage a conversation around this issue. I'm interested in other opinions please share!!!! :) :) :) :) Alex I'm on board with the newsletter 100% I hesitate on the LFS issue but I'd like to talk more about it!

I agree, its a touchy subject because we don’t want to support somebody who won't support the animals, but at the same time, the people visiting those troubled stores probably need us more then somebody visiting coral island. hmmm

let me get some coffee and breakfast and think about this one. :D

yes they do and I want to help them more than anyone. we have some errands to run; but we'll keep thinking about it. I think we have an opportunity here and I'd like to take advantage of it. I'm glad you brought it to the table! Enjoy your breakfast and we'll check back later. maybe others will chime in, in the meantime.

Hi all,

I just wanted to say that I love the newsletter and networking through the stores ideas.

At some point in time this club may have enough clout and credibility to go in and cause changes at our local stores from just a conversation, but not yet. Even the most gently worded suggestion can sound like criticism to someone who has had a less than stellar day.

Lets go to the stores we want to improve, look, talk to the people who are working there, ask them about what fish they have at home....act friendly folks.... build a bit of a platform so you have something to launch the argument from. We want for them to have better animal management. Right now, they don't even know who we are.

At this point in time the club very small. We are all used to speaking our minds, even if those thoughts will be less than popular at the given location.. but until the club gets a-going, people (stores) are going to judge the club by our actions. If a person in (club) power walks into a store and makes a bad impression then the club makes a bad impression.

I say lets wait. Work with all stores in the area. Praise the things stores are doing right - in the newsletter - there has to be something that every store has that makes it "better" than every other. Print articles about great animal husbandry. Then, one day, months from now, when dropping off that newsletter send in the member that gets along best with the staff at that store and say something like, "Hey, at the last meeting some members were talking about your tanks. They wondered what happened....." and build on it from there.

Whew...that was wordy. Disagree if you like, just don't throw anything pointy at me! I would have to use Jason as a shield and then he would be really ticked off at me.

One last thing. I have to stress this. IMPRESSIONS ARE IMPORTANT. One store Jay and I went to had some bad runs in with a reefclub and people in the past. We were able to get our flyer up by talking about Jen, how she was the person in charge, how nice she was, how great Jen (and her husband's) tank was... etc.. We went from "no flyers" to "I'll make sure people know about the club".

Is there a spell check on this thing?
Regards

Leena- I think you put things in the right order and I agree with you 100%. Lets make friends not enemies. I don't care for the quality of the local fish stores here but as Alex said when you need something in a hurry you can get it. So maybe we only get dry goods or something special from them now and work on getting the quality better. We can't change everything today it will take time.

Mrs. W.
my wish list for reeftopia is 100 golden snails and a serpant star. If we are in-between bulk orders let me know I might up my order.

By the way Jen reeftopia will give you an order blank to keep track of everyone and they will package the order.... peg is "a" alex is "b" ect. I have done group buys with them before so if you need help just ask.

Ok, We need to move our discussions from here into OUR NEW FORUM!!!!! :) So I'll tie up the LFS issue by saying Colleen I agree you pretty much summed it up and put things into perspective. I'll go with the flow! :)

Now if we may redirect our threads to our Forum as posted by Roy above! I am going to post a note and send PM's this AM for the group order! And off we go into the sunset! :)
