LOL...
Ok, I have a bit of brainstorming and thanks to recent feedback; my thoughts may have been turned into a reality. Damage control is upon us.
It seems that many of us who have expressed our "concern" over the conditions at some of the LFS in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho have led us into a SMALL predicament. Basically, there are some that have reservations about helping out a group that won't help them back.
Let’s squash that right away, when it comes down to a NEED, we do have options. I know I have purchased items and services from just about every LFS in this state. If somebody calls me and needs salt NOW, I will tell them every LFS in their area, that’s because I am looking out for the animals.
Are there better options if it’s not so critical? Maybe, just remember that’s a personal preference and we, as a group has to be open to. As an example, I like Liveaquaria, some like Clarks, some like critters, etc... It’s their choice, and I am all for it as long as the bottom line "Life and well being" is being sought.
As I said in the last meeting, we do need the support of the community for us to help. If we are narrowed down to one avenue (which doesn’t exist right now), It’s hard to maintain our momentum.
My proposal:
Flyers is a great idea to get the word OUT, but to redeem ourselves as a resource, I propose a NMOK Marine newsletter that we can hand out to the LFS as well. In the newsletter we can offer reviews, tips, tricks, a list of LFS, Newbie orientation, species compatibility, Tank of the month, as well our information. This will show our commitment to the lfs as well as to the community. Also, in the newsletter we could offer a "Frags" section where individuals could go online, post up any frags they have available, etc... The most important item here is to remain unbiased towards any one LFS.
Option 1 (Ledger / Tabloid): It adds some cost for the paper and printing but I think we could scrounge up the resources. I have a HP Duplexing printer that will print Ledger / Tabloid and I think we could fit everything on one sheet double sided (which gives us 4 printable pages)
Option 2 (Letter): If we wanted to a bit cheaper, we could use a standard page folded in half for 4 HALF pages. Especially in the beginning that would probably work fine.
As for content, we can use our own or just paraphrase hot topics found on the web such as Randy’s 2 part Calcium / Alk supplement, or Test kits, lighting comparison, Pumps, Bare Bottom, DSB, IMAC Coverage, coral growth rates, proper tank params, Refuge's, etc... The list is endless and we can get information pretty easy to fill the pages. To get fancy, on the cover page we could display the tank of the month (or quarter) in color to show the tank in its full glory.
Just an idea. Let me know what you think and if it’s a go, I will start on a prototype and possible templates.
