Reef Octopus Depth Help

just got myself a Reef Octopus skimmer for my 75g there are lines that say water depth on the outside of the skimmer.

Do they mean sump depth for it to sit in or the water inside?

thanks i was scared that we needed a bigger tank a 29 gallon would have been very hard to work with with the room we have

Which skimmer did you buy?

I have the SRO 2000sss and I have it set up with the water level below the "mini" line on the skimmer. The water level seems best at the top or just below the orange octopus decal underneath the "Water level Mini" line.

Seems like you have to play around with it for up to a month as it breaks in... (takes like 2-3 weeks from what I've read on RC).

yeah that water level line can also be misleading depending on how low your skimmer is sitting in water. my NWB150 sits in 7" of water, so i ignore that line :D

BriggsReef,
I just bought an SRO-PS-1000INT. I found the instructions to be vague. After a few tips from RC members I came to the conclusion that the outside water level should be about .5 inches lower than the output pipe.

From my experience wtih my SRO 1000 & 2000, the best level of water the skimmer sits in is 6", although Coralvue says 5.5" - 5.75". You can read that HERE.

The output pipe also has a predetermined height from the factory depending on model, however, that is not always the case. I have cut the midpipe that connects the output from the skimmer to the gate valve, to make the bottom of the output gate valve 6". You can read about the output skimmer height issue HERE.

I also use the metric adaptor from Coralvue on the output, coupled to a US Plastics schedule 40 gray pvc 90* elbow to both skimmers with no issues. Here is an old pic, as my new 90* elbow is smooth on the outside to match factory plumbing.

My SRO XP-2000SSS has the pump built inside of the skimmer. When I had the water level at 6" from the bottom I had issues getting the skimmate to reach the collection cup. Maybe this was because the skimmer wasn't broken in yet.

Currently my later level is about 8"-9" and my skimmate is pretty wet and tea colored.

All of the input I've seen that have showed actual water levels are for the SRO2000 versions with the blaster pump outside of the skimmer (not XP-2000SSS versions).

Does anyone with a XP-2000SSS have any input on a water level height that has worked best?

I wrote coralvue and haven't received a response.

Thanks.

The nwb skimmer uses an entirely different pump and has an entirely different operating depth. The two skimmer are like night and day.

I don't believe BriggsReef ever specifically stated exactly which skimmer he has... Does anyone have pics or experience with an XP-2000SSS running in the correct water depth?

It doesn't seem like the 6" stated on the Coralvue website or the "Water level Mini"/"Water level Max" lines on the skimmer body are correct (they are like 11" - 13" from the base of the skimmer).
