Do they work well? the cheap ones do not have leads so I guess I couldnt control the aperture or use autofocus. What is the maximum length you can use for magnification?

if there was a cheap way to get macro, everyone on here, starting with Jesse, would have it and use it and recommend it.

you can use google to search about new Ideas though, ..

a tube, is just that, a tube, its empty, it just moves the lens further away from the camera. lowering the DOF.

Sorry I have so many questions. So my final question how would a 100-400mm zoom lens plus full extension tube work for taking macros?

it wont take macro.

but you can always crop the pics. specially since the camera is high resolution.

you can still take alot of beautiful close up shots of corals and fish .. hope you got the IS version ? if not make sure to use a good tripod.

Not sure what the IS version is. I just bought the cheapest/highest rated ones on ebay. 15$ total spent. I think the cropping will probably work great along with this combo. Ill post updates to show some pics when they arrive.

a 50mm is not a macro but it is a prime that a lot of people like. it is very versatile

tubes are good but they can seriously make the dof smaller
this is a six inch basket and each wrap is maybe a 1/4in


here you can see the dof in the wood below the shell


and here is the same shell. you can get an idea of how small the dof is as the shell is maybe a 2in
