Reef Safe Puffers???

The whole family wants a puffer fish and I have an all sps tank so is there any type of reef safe puffer fish?

Thanks

No not that i know of.... but Im sure there are others that have kept a puffer in a reef tank without a problem but i would never trust them. If you keep it well fed im sure it would be fine but they eat like pigs and are very, very messy eaters they would leave alot of waste in your tank. Im sure you have a good amount of money in your reef tank so far with it being an all sps tank.

If you get a puffer and it eats some coral over night you probly could have set a nice little tank up just for him for the price of some damaged corals. Personally i wouldn't do it but like i said before im sure someone kept one for a long time and never had a problem. IMO I don't think it's worth the risk.

If i was to try any puffer it would be the Saddle Valentini Puffer because it stays quite small. Less food, bioload, & risk.

There's a risk involved with every puffer, but the Tobies are your safest bet. Don't be surprised if they take a liking to nibbling on various things in your reef though. Some of them will pick at corals, others won't, it's just the luck of the draw. Also, cleanup crews are certainly at risk.

i have a saddle valentini and he is a model citizen. Hasn't touched any of my lps or softies. Dont have any sps so cant help you there though.

I have a valentini and it doesn't bother anything....SPS, LPS softies, zoas, anemone.
Same experience here, but I didn't have SPS.

Shawn, is your family aware that it won't be puffing up unless it's under some serious stress? Just a thought...:D

We have a Porcipine Puffer we have had it for about 3years got it when it was about 3 inches long we have hand fed it the whole time it has never touched any corals Hard or soft we have a cleaner shrimp that actually will clean the puffer it is quite amusing to watch. the only problem we have had is that it likes small clowns he has ate 3. we have a larger clown that he doesn't mess with just so ya know puffers can be a reef safe fish.

Haha yes AngelFish they know that, I think I will go with a valentini saddle puffer and watch it very closely in my frag tank before putting it in the DT

Glad you weren't offended by my post :D I loved my little teeny Valentini. He was an odd little fish. Be sure and catch him sleeping, they have their own "style". Mine was easily spooked by the hand. I learned to be careful of him when I was doing tank maintenance.

Enjoy and please post pics!

Oh if I didn't have clams I might actually be wiling to try one of these myself. I love puffers they're so cute!

No clams though. I always thought filefish were not reefsafe?

I agree, the mimic filefish would not be completely reef-safe(may nip polyps) but may be a safer alternative than the valentini
