Reef safe triggerfish and pufferfish

I really love the black triggerfish and the saddle puffer. I have 2 cleaner shrimp in my tank right now and am going to put a mandarin goby, two clowns, a blue tang, coral beauty, neon goby, and diamond goby in. I was wondering if anyone has had success with the black trigger and saddle puffer in a reef aquarium or if there are other triggerfish or pufferfish that would be okay to have in a reef aquarium.

pinktail, nigers, and x trigs work out well...but you can never fully trust a trig..

Is the black one that would possibly be safe? On online sites where you can buy them they're usually listed as reef safe or reef safe with caution. What would they eat? The shrimp and snails or the corals?

Shrimp, snails, and clean up crew in general.

Blue jaw are probably the most common in reefs as they tend to more mild than the others. Followed by Niger. As stated though... You can never trust a trigger

Do you think if I got a small black trigger and it grew up with the shrimp and was well fed it would leave them alone? I would think since the cleaner shrimp do clean the fish the trigger would use that service

I have kept hermits and shrimp with my trigs...the smart ones learn quickly to only venture out after lights out...they get picked off but it allows the trigs to act like the preds they are...

You could always try a cowfish.

I have a blue jaw trigger pair in my 180 and they are model citizens. I have shrimp and clams with no issues.

Do you think one black trigger with 2 cleaner shrimp and then some snails would be okay? Do you think a saddle puffer would be okay in the same situation?

There was a guy on Boston Reefers selling a reef safe Clown Trigger. It was $100 but was like 6-7"........too big for me to snag.

Id rather not get one that big already. I want to get them both very small and watch them grow. I like getting all my fish as small as possible

I have a trio of Cross Hatch Triggers in my reef. They don't bother any invert, coral or fish in my tank. I do have a lot of small fish as well. My Naso is way more active and hyper than my triggers.

Interesting. Ive heard that they usually leave the cleaner shrimp alone because they know it serves a purpose that they sometimes use, the snails though are fair game if they're hungry. But if they eat a snail or two I wouldn't be upset since they're cheap. Do you know if the crosshatch would behave similar to a black hawaiian trigger?

I don't think such a thing exists. Certainly not long term.

Me neither, but he said he had it in his reef for a few years with no issues at all.

If it was smaller, I could have given it a try..........clown trigger is my absolute favorite fish.

Idk part of me says that if they are tank raised and are introduced into the aquarium young and are too small to eat any of the inverts then theres a chance they won't bother them as they grow

They're doing great,hanging out together ,the male starting eat formula 1 flake food.the female eat everything i throw in the tank.The male is smallest i ever seen for a crosshatch ,great personality .
