Reef1589's Over the top 40b SPS Build

Reef1589

Anemones for life
So, I recently moved out of my brothers house ..
and got a place of my own, so I no longer get to enjoy our 150g that we did together, unless I visit his house everyday.. (could be an option I spose.... =P)

Most of you who know me, know I spend majority of my time in the Anemone thread with my S. Gig anem's and my baby clowns ... so im changing pace
a little bit..

So at my new place im starting out small, and doing a 40b Peninsula Style SPS Barebottom Tank..

with this tank, I wanna do a lot of different things that I didn't do on our old setups, for instance ... being Clean and Organized and making everything Simple and easy to use for the GF when im gone.. =D

This is still in the building stages... but im hoping to get everything up and running shortly.. =] before Christmas hopefully.. but im taking the time to do it correctly and make sure its right, so it could always be pushed back =P

Tank List
- 40b
- 20L sump
- 10g Frag Tank
- 5g tank/jug ATO

Equipment List
- AI Hydra (1) (might upgrade to 2 later on, see how it goes)
- 2 Mp10W's
- Mag 7
- Reef Octopus 4" Pinwheel In Sump Skimmer OCT NWB110
- BRS Dual Reactor (carbon/gfo)
- BRS Dosing Pumps for 2 part
- Reef Keeper Light (with additional PC4 Outlets and PH probe)
- JBJ ATO
- Glass holes 700 GPH Overflow Kit

Now because im not skilled in computer programming/engineering I had to literally take this one to the drawing board...

Here is my Initial Drawing
Im going to run the plumbing back up, through the canopy along the top of the tank to return on the opposite side of the tank
<a href="http://s1113.photobucket.com/user/Reef1589/media/TankBuild.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k507/Reef1589/TankBuild.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo TankBuild.jpg"/></a>

Here it is Becoming a Reality...
Instead of just using Plywood and painting it, I decided to use melamine Board.. that has that nice pressed finish, for the gloss black (outside) gloss white (inside) appearance..
I went all out for this stand, all the way to the hinges..., Spring loaded hinges for the canopy doors.. =D The days of the door falling on my head cause the rubber band snapped are over!!!!

Stand Layout

Thats all I have for now on Pictures of the tank..

Here is my Expected Live Stock.. Let me know what you think
- Barlett's Anthias x3
- Acares Midget Reef Chromis x5
- Bi-color Blenny x1
- Yellow Candy Hogfish
- Clownfish x2 (maybe, if I decide to put an S. Gig in this tank, undecided atm)

Let me know if there is anything youd recommend to add to that list as well..

Now Onto some colorful pictures, to show you what is in store..
this is the 150g tank me and my bro did together.. it was a mixed reef that leaned more towards the sps side

Looks good. I think your will find you will want a second Hydra. I run 2 vega blues over my 40B, and its just right. I was considering using melamine also, but went with oak ply that I laminated with "Formica". I decided to go BB too, I wish I would have used starboard flushed to the top of the bottom trim. When Im viewing my tank from my couch some chalices and encrusting pieces get hidden.

A 40b with a 20L is my next setup. I have a soft spot for them.

I'm following. Wishing you the best of luck.

Have you thought about raising the frag tank above the sump so you don't have to run two pumps? Just have the main tank drain into frag tank then into the sump?

Following along because I'm planning a 40b too.

Yea, the frag tank will be raised up (I know it doesn't show it in the drawing but while we were messing with the stand we decided this)

although I didn't think of having it drain into the Frag tank.. then the sump, I was gonna just have the frag tank be on its own pump..
but I might do this idea now...

A Small update, after doing a little bit of research I decided to avoid the Glass 10g Frag tank to drill, and im having a custom acrylic 10g Made and will drill that :)

Its killing Me to have all the equipment sitting here.. and the stand not built yet, that's all im waiting on..

Got my Doser pumps in the mail today :D

and went and checked out how my stand was coming along... its coming along Nicely :)

<a href="http://s1113.photobucket.com/user/Reef1589/media/S1.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k507/Reef1589/S1.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo S1.jpg"/></a>

Also, I picked up my Acrylic 10g Frag tank.. turned out awesome! =D im very happy with it, and don't gotta worry about it breaking now.

Looks good man, ill be following along; you going to try to keep a smaller hosting nem in this tank? (maybe H. malu)

It is coming along nicely. I would suggest some uprights under the tank for support, the way it is now the only support on the left side is a couple of screws. Even a 2x2 under each connection to the existing uprights will provide support and keep the weight of the tank from shearing off the screws. The cross brace under the tank needs to be supported on the ends.

haha, idk man, I really wanna stray away from anemone's with this tank because once I add one, I go crazy with them ... and make the tank specifically about the anemone... with this one I plan to house some higher end SPS, and my anemone of choice is S. Gig.. so idk haha,
if I do, it'll be my Purple S. gig that house my Snowonyx/Rods onyx breeder pair, my initial plan was to do strictly SPS though, with a few Paly/Zoa's and LPS pieces..

Very nice. Who'd you get to make the acrylic tank?

Thanks! :) a LFS around me, who I believe had Zero Edge make it :D only took a week too, and the dimensions are spot on!
I might have it make a acrylic box with chambers in it for my 2 part dosing after how well this turned out

when I was there last night we talked about support beams and what not, and I let him know that there would be roughly 400 lbs. sitting on the stand..
hes probably gonna add 2x2 under there some where. I want to try and keep the front where the doors are gonna be as open as possible tho, but if worse comes to worse and I need to put them there, ill have to do it.

this is what happens when your sick of just looking at your equipment... and your in the middle of decorating your tree

this is what the light looked like on full blast haha.. EVERY TREE NEEDS A TOPPER! :D

Turned it down just a bit =D some BRS 2 part dosers and tubing and ornaments...

I know these are small, and un fun updates, and you all wanna see Bright colored sticks, that wont happen until the tanks running!

butttttt, in the mean time, I went to my bro's house and played with about 150 Lbs of Dead Rock, and I think I came up with my rockscape that's gonna go into the 40b, ill probably plug it and clay it together.. =D

also on a thread I found on here, someone drilled the bottom of their rock and put acrylic frag plugs on the bottom of the rock, to sit level and prevent tipping on bare bottom tanks, im probably gonna give this a shot as well..

let me know what you guys think.. of my imaginary towel 40b Dimension haha :P

I think this layout provides lots of real estate for some stunner colonies to grow out =D and will looks even..

lol here is a LONG overdue... update on my 40b setup..

this build got put on hold for awhile due to me moving to multiple places and I finally am at a place where I can settle down for a bit..

in the past week ive made a giant step of progress and its actually assembled and in the house, and it should be up and running within the next week just got to get my hand onf 50-60 gallons of RODI water until my RODI unit comes here.. :D haha

here's some pictures

First view when you walk in from the garage
<a href="http://s1113.photobucket.com/user/Reef1589/media/STand%20Complete.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k507/Reef1589/STand%20Complete.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo STand Complete.jpg"/></a>

the front of the tank stand, I really like the way this turned out and how the Reef Keeper Display screen sits in there

<a href="http://s1113.photobucket.com/user/Reef1589/media/ReefKeeper.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k507/Reef1589/ReefKeeper.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo ReefKeeper.jpg"/></a>

And here is my Sump currently, all the wires are hidden and tucked away.. with the except of 2-3 that are not currently installed right now but those will be hidden as well, so what you see here is pretty much how it will look, Nice and Clean looking just what I was aiming for
<a href="http://s1113.photobucket.com/user/Reef1589/media/Sumpcomplete.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k507/Reef1589/Sumpcomplete.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo Sumpcomplete.jpg"/></a>

Let me know what you guys think and any input and ideas will be greatly appreciated ! :D

right onnnn! looks like a great start to an awesome build. keep up the good work and truck on. the scape looks like it'll hold a lot of sticks. only thing I would do differently is remove the rock in between both islands. All in all, can't wait to see how she turns out! keep us updated please.

Here is what it looks like with the rock between the islands removed.
