Reef1589's Over the top 40b SPS Build

oops, I meant the other rock lol! haha do what you like. Im just a way minimalistic type person, where less is more. are you going to glue the rocks together...once you have found a scape that you are satisfied with.

How does the plumbing look above the tank and have you found a lighting unit to illuminate all the goodies?

Here is the plumbing up in the canopy

<a href="http://s1113.photobucket.com/user/Reef1589/media/Canopy%20Plumbing.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k507/Reef1589/Canopy%20Plumbing.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo Canopy Plumbing.jpg"/></a>

I plumbed it up over the tank, and then to the front.... to kind of give it some more flow in the front, im really happy with the way this turned out, and sits nicely in the canopy.

and yes the Rocks will all be silicone together once I figure out how I want to set them up.

I added these little detachable doors on both sides.. (these doors currently pictures are not finished and do not fully fit atm so ignore that for now)

And then for Lighting, for the start up im only going to have 1 AI Hydra, but in the near future I plan to buy 2 AI hydra 26's, and then I want to do 2 DIY T5's with Coral+ in each fixture... it will be 1 Fixture on both sides of the canopy, with the AI's sitting in the middle.

sweet sounds like you have everything already figured out and under control. did you just put water in tonight? and is that a gl*******s overflow that I see? I am contemplating using one or a xaqua on my new build.

Yes it is a GH 700gph Overflow kit, I like it, and its pretty quiet... from what I tested out in the garage...

things that im unsure of right now is for my Dosing... is it alright to have my dosing pumps dose into my first chamber of my sump? Also where the Protein skimmer is, and the Pump for my Carbon/GFO reactor? or should I put the dosing hose in one of the baffles before the fuge... so it still gets good flow/mixed in good.. or should I go straight to the last chamber and put the hoses right by the return and pump right into the tank?

and the other thing is, im unsure of if when I buy my 2 AI Hydra 26's.. if I want to add 2 T5 Coral+ as additional lighting/supplement to see if it promotes better growth.

And water wont be in it until my RODI unit arrived which im guessing ill be Thursday or Friday.. :D

2 AI 26s isnt going to work well I can tell you that right now.

Just sold all my 26's and went to MH. I think 2 in the 40g would work well. But I would just save youself money and buy 1 Hydra 52 or get a t5ho ati sunpower. The problem I see right now and tested myself with Puck LEDs is that the spread of Par is terrible, Right under the puck is great but anything outside of that suffers badly. In my 30g frag tank I had a single AI Hydra 26 over it. The tank is 24x24x12 and the light was maybe 8" above water line. Right under the light I had about 160 Par on the edges of the tank I was about 30 par...I tossed a 14k 175w MH up over the frag tank about a foot off the water and now my lowest par in the tank is 190 and the center is pushing 430.

I would suggest you look for an LED with more light spread. This is one reason why people still do better with AI Sols then the hydras or vegas.

I really like the Aquascape by the way. It looks great.

thank you, I tried to go for a minimalistic look while still implementing my favorite thing.. LEDGES!!!!! :bounce1::bounce1: and CAVES!!! :eek1::eek1:
hahaha

And I was worried about that.. I currently have an AI Hydra...with the controller, I like it, I enjoy the colors im getting on my current tank and its settings.

I saw the stats on the 26 on BRS and its par readings so that was the only reason I was gonna do the 26's.. but It does show that it is very narrow light beam and towards the edges it had a lower par reading then the normal Hydra..
the only reason I figured I could get away with 2 is because a 40b isn't that drastically wide...
and to give a more even light spread.. two Coral+ on each side... I thought might make up for something..

I appreciate your input tho.. and might just do the 52 as you suggested.. or a Radion maybe.

awesome, ill probably have to do some more research to see what I like best for the overflows.

I honestly would put the dosing tubes in the last chamber and separate their time intervals roughly ten minutes apart. just to make sure the first liquid has plenty of time to mix and be sent out to the main display. to each its own though. I don't believe there is right way to dosing if its just small amounts anyways. Lets imagine you dose 250ml of a concentrated amount over a ball of chaeto or other macro algae all at once, im sure you'll get a negative side effect, however were not all that stupid right?

as for lights, if you put a couple of t5 tubes over the tank. the colored sticks will enjoy the tan.

Can't wait to see the progression.

Have the overflow and it's nice. I'm sure there are ones that are absolutely silent, but it's cheap and easy to do for most sub par tool users. Just need patients , a drill, a beer, and some water. :)

Agree with him about the dosing.

Agree with him about the t5s.

Cheers lads!

Haha still subscribed and following. :D

haha good deal :) hopefully I can have some colored sticks as great as yours :D

Yea, ive never experienced any other DIY overflows, so I have no feed back on them. But as LoLGranny said, this one is cheap, efficient and gets the job done, and imo it isn't that crazy loud... for me anyways.

Ill have a picture up in a bit of how I got my dosing pumps setup.. waiting for my RODI unit to arrive, gave me time to finish all the final steps of mounting stuff in the sump.. looks clean :) im happy with it.

here is the final configurations on the sump.. all the Wires hidden, tucked away...all the plumbing finalized.....

What do you guys think ?

Skimmer Cord ran up right behind the PVC up into the wood, as well as the Reactor pump that hidden behind the skimmer.

The only thing that will look different when its all done is there will be 2 PC4's on the left side... that everything plugs into.. but as you guessed, im going to make it look as sleek as possible :)

2 part will be dosed right into the baffle after the Protien skimmer chamber.

Also my RODI unit should be here today or tomarrow, than its Water TIME! :D

Here is another thing I am unsure of this build progresses..

The 10g frag tank I had planned...
my intentions were to use it as a Frag/QT system for the Display but have it all as once system plumbed together... Was gonna load it with Filter socks tho..

Obviously use Chemicals in another tank... separate from it all.. but just put my new corals here after dipping to view... and see if I see any parasites on them after a few days...

Do you guys think I should do this or just do it as a ATO ?.. a really expensive 10g acrylic ATO tank haha..

If anyone can throw in some input here for me, I would greatly appreciate it as ive been bouncing back and fourth between what I should do with this.

if its a frag tank im going to Raise it and add an overflow to it.. and just plumb a MJ1200 return or something maybe a tad bigger to it.

set the tank up as a frag tank. that will be killer for down the road. not only for new frags but for new clippings from your tank. wish I had the space and funds to plumb something together like that.

That extra little tank, I would keep as a separate frag tank: for two reasons:

1. As a QT; especially if you are going to keep SPS; you DONT want AEFW's.
2. All other times, use it as a frag tank and basically a backup for your nice SPS.

I know it will mean a few extra pieces of equipment; but trust me it will be worth it.

Nice build Reef, I'm definitely subbed:). I would have to agree with Sahin on keeping the frag tank separate:beer:

Here she is.. All filled :)
