Reef1589's S. Gigantea Collection.

Any problems with these nems moving? I can't remember how well these nems stay put...

Gorgeous specimens you have though!

Nope, so far they have all stayed put for me..
i know i run a high risk of them moving tho, and i keep that in mind.. so i dont really have that many High End SPS... and if i do i try to put em in strategic spots so if i see the nem moving, i can move the SPS

Wait... for those of us that are memory impared...can you put a few of your pics in order from date so we can see the increase/decrease in size.

I scroll up and already forget what I am looking for... hahahaha

Wait... What are we talking about again?

well knowing Ecotech, im sure they did alot of research into the templates they provided.. im sure they are close, but probably not dead on with the Wild.. and in the wild im pretty sure the anemone's act just as they do in our tanks, open up at day, and shrink during the night..

and the color temperature in the wild is more towards a 10k i beleive? (direct sunlight) thats why most corals you see in wild are brown with little color.. us as hobbyist use the blue's to bring out the color in our tank's..

the anemone's i dont have pictured, are under 10k, much more brown, with only purple tips.. (similiar to Minh's) if i were to change my lights in my 150g to 10k look, the blue anemone would get much more brown in the tantacles with the Tips just being blue .... thats just from my experience, anyone else is free to chime into that..

Not sure if i answered your question right tom haha but i gave it a shot :P :lmao:

No you absolutely did, all I'm trying to do is gather information and experiences from others who have the same setup (LEDs) or MH... I know the majority of Gig keepers still favor the MHs over LEDs. The reason I ask is because I was always under the impression that when the gig gets smaller at night it should lose some size, but my purple loses probably 30-40% of its size when he notices the whites start ramping down... Right when blues start to hit in the morning again he starts to get gigantic again, so I'm thinking either the rather accurate ramp up\down is simulating natural life better or something because it's only been two months and he has gotten gigantic and Zoox population is coming back very quickly.

Long term is really more important than anything and I have only had this guy under these conditions for two months, but we'll see now that my green is in the same system...

What I'm trying to say is, I'm curious to see how they react differently (if anything) to a "natural mode" template that is simulating their natural environment vs just a MH light or LED turning on\off.. That's all, as long winded as this was, so my apologies :-)

Does anyone have any par reading from the lights that they are using
led par numbers _______
metal halide par numbers ________
t-5 par numbers _________
would be interested in the differences in par

OrionN any advice here

When i borrowed someone par meter my

With my LeD Setup Par numbers were Mid 400's-High 400's,
and honestly my S. Giga's THRIVED under those LeD's, looked alot better imo.

with my new 250w Metal Halide system its about the same High 400's,

These Par Numbers were all out of my Shallow Reef Tank, only reason i switched from LeD's to MH.. is because i wanted to try and get better color out of my SPS, but i got the same results with my LeD's so ima be switching back here soon to LeD's on that tank.

And for the other question...

the Purple S. Gigantea reacts normal, eats fine... just like your everyday healthy shaggy s. gig carpet anemone.. only thing is it shrunk in size like you observed. :(

just a picture i like :) yes, i still have red slime... gonna go buy some stuff for that this weekend.

I would not. Just change water and adjust the skimmer. Antibiotic for red slime does not work long term and really cause imbalance to your system,

Just an update on my Purple and Green one,
they are still recovering after moving my tank from the upstairs to the downstairs..
kind of did an unorthodox way ot getting the purple s. gig to detatch.. ha since it was so firmly attched to the tank bottom, and ice cubes werent working, i drained the tank to nothing and tipped it up on its side while it slowly detached itself,
it was about a 20 minute process.. ( yes... i had my S. Gig.. out of the water for roughly ..25-30 minutes.. in my eyes its no difference from in the wild when tides come and go... where they sit out of the water for hours...yes i did continue to put water on it for this time being) goes to show when you have a Healthy one what they can go through...

the purple and blue ones in my 150g are still doing awsome, and the baby purple is still kicking, as well as the purple in the 29g biocube..
although i have moved the baby purple to its own 20g long tank..

I havent fed my gig's in month.. when i first got them i was doing once a week ...

but i could say i havent really fed my gig's in upwards of 4-6 months..
when i was feeding.. i was feeding Raw Shrimp.. they seemed to of enjoyed that :D

Here is a small video of my S. Gig / Clownfish setup...

ignore the Blue S. gig in the treatment tank.. as ill be making a thread about him shortly.. lets just say an accident happened.. involving rocks falling his foot being teared.. he's currently being Treated.. with Levo (same as cipro) and is respoding quite nicely so far..

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/RqsNJPay_co" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

haha hes actually on the top of the rocks and his folds actually go up on the return pvc....and literally are sticking out of the water hahaha... hes finding his comfy spot...just moved the whole tank a week ago..

great video. the little nemos, gigs and the tank. hope you don't mind but will be studying your setup. good luck with Blue gig. if you don't mind post a link here when you start the thread.

alright so instead of making a new thread I decided id just post about it here, and keep everything in one location..

so as you may have read further up, we were doing some work in the 150g, moving some stuff, and some rocks decided they wanted to fall... one rock went one way, the other went another way.. resulting in a full chunk of the disk being torn out...

I immediately reacted, took it out of the tank, and put him into treatment.... I did 3/4 a full pill of 500MG levo.

Here is a Picture of when it first happened

I will have updated pics of it later today

Here is pictures of it today

imo responding nicely to such a big chunk being torn out of him... he still has it covered up pretty well, so I cant actually get a shot of the wound at the moment.. but as you can see he isn't as "tense"... I think he will pull thru.... he hasn't doesn't any inflate/deflate of any sort.. so that is also a good sign.
