PROTEIN SKIMMER: Super Reef Octopus XP 5000 IN-SUMP Cone Protein
Skimmer by CoralVue

I would consider the new LED's light option unless you already own the MH, the Reeflo pumps are among the quiets pumps I have own. you could eliminate the need of a chiller.
You may need more flow than 2 vortechs, (depends on the corals you wish to have)
You are missing a few things, like a good ATO, possibly some reactors kalk, calcium, fluidize etc.

250w halides pushing the limit on that size tank, I have 3-400w on my 300 (30" deep) with 4-60" t5 supplements. I have the SRO 5000 external and have been real happy with it. I had two MP40w on mine and I found that there doesn't seem to be quite enough flow and added two small powerheads and am in the process of adding two 3/4" sea swirls to go along with my mp40's. I also use a reeflo dart for return that I bought used and looks ancient, my skimmer and vortecs are way louder then the dart, I would highly recommend a reeflo. +1 on the ATO, sure beats trying to remember to add 5-10 gallons a week, I use a JBO control and 30 gal garbage can hidden behind the tank. Hope you have a cheap source of saltwater I was spending about $40-50 a month on saltwater alone till I started collecting my own natural sea water.

Thank you Rogger for the excellent advice. How many Vortechs do you think is enough? In regards to the lighting, I already own the MH's. What is an ATO?

I have a 300 at the moment and I have to agree I have 2 reeflo dart super golds 4300gph and they are almost dead silent..... my skimmer makes more noise....also agree you may want more flow Im running 4 vortechs, a closed loop with 4 inlets from it, and the 4 returns from the return pump at the moment. Im building a new 340 and it will not only have the 4 vortechs, the 4 returns from the return pump, but will also incorporate 8 inlets from the closed loop with 2 oceans motions 4 ways controlling them.

I took your advice and called Coral Vue to change them, To my luck I hadn't used the ballast's I had gotten from them for a warranty exchange so they agreed to exchange for 3-400 watts. 1 problem resolved. Vortechs I know I need more but I need more moneyyyyy hahahahaha. Hopefully I can gather them before the tanks is ready in November. I am definitely going to buy the Reeflos return pump. In regards to ATO (Automatic Top Off) I was trying to figure out what that was, I am going to put a kent marine float to auto top off from the RO. This is going to be an odyssey.

I thought about that idea but I like the idea of a little bit of height in the tank. I would put the lights suspended on the 72x36x27 but I can't find a way to have MH's, T5's in a aesthetic looking way without all the cables, etc. I found a fixture but it was $3000. Too much money. A canopy will have to do for now. I'm going to get the Lumen Max reflectors.

PROTEIN SKIMMER: Super Reef Octopus XP 5000 IN-SUMP Cone Protein
Skimmer by CoralVue-
I would consider many many many skimmers prior to using the one above mentioned. For a 300 you are ging to need a good skimmer in the long run, I would certainly not go cheap here.
POWERHEADS (FLOW): 2-Vortech MP40W ES Propeller Pump
by EcoTech Marine
Depending on your corals and rockwork U will must likely need at least 4 -- two will not be enuff.
CONTROLLER: Reef Keeper ELITE V2 System by Digital Aquatics----- great but plenty better out there--- with tons of upgrades available.
RETURN PUMP: Any IDEAS?? Heard Reeflo's are really loud--- reeflos are excellent pumps and no they are not loud AT ALL compared to many other pumps .
I currently have one in my system.( snapper- You need next size up)
CHILLER (ALREADY OWN): 1/3HP Current USA Prime Chiller with Single-Stage Thermostat
A 1/3 chiller will certainly be overworked on a system that size here in south florida. Consider a tradewinds unit that are us made and easily repaired on the spot.

You are welcome, the ATO is an Automatic Water Top off.
As far as the vortechs, I am not sure what type of corals are you trying to keep and also how is your rock work going to be, if it is SPS's and your rock is going to be leaning against the back glass then you might be able to get away for a few months with only two until your corals grow and you save the money.
If this tank is a peninsula and the rock is in the middle then you are going to need at least 4 IMO.

Btw quick q
Is this your first tank?
If so building a 300 on a tight budget is def not a good idea.
At the end of the day a 150 should make u happier.
My two cents

That is a very nice dimension tank. You will be happy with Reef Savvy's craftsmanship. Since you will have to cycle your tank it will give you time to save up and buy more power heads. I agree with Gasman, a high quality skimmer is worth investing. It is the heart of your system. I'm not sure if you have already purchased the Vortech. If you haven't you should look into the Tunze pumps. Last, spend the money on quality test kits. Don't cheap out, you will end up regretting it.

This is my 3rd tank.... I started off years ago with a 90 Gallon, then this 150 which I have been wanting to upgrade because of the depth being so slim for my taste. Sooooo New House, I couldn't let the opportunity pass to get my 300.... i'm not necessarily on a budget but you know how it is, tough times to be over spending... What skimmer would you recommend? I had heard many good comments on the Octopus Cone Skimmer 5000

I like the I-Tech skimmers. I have the I-Tech 400. Great product and customer service. They are manufacture in Tampa. Bubble King and Vertex Alpha are awesome too. What is your budget?

Never heard about I-tech. Vertex are nice and work well I have heard but they only make one rated for a 280. Bubble kings are too much money

Spoke to someone over at Ecotech and they said it would be good if I purchased 2 MPW60's instead of the 4 40's. He said I could place one on each end of the tank and that would be great flow.... What do you guys think?

If it was me I'd go for 4 mp40's, you can spread the flow out more with 4 heads vs 2, not to mention this is the first generation of mp60's so who knows how well they will last. The cost would be approx the same, I got my gen 2 mp40's for 375 new, you can buy used for $300. The MSRP for the MP60's will be $700. Additionally, if one does go out your down to 75% flow instead of 50%.

You have a very good point, I hadn't thought about any of those factors. I am going to go with the 4 MP40's instead. Thank you. I will be posting pictures of the build as it goes. Tank should be running first or second week of December.

Sump dimensions will be 48x30x16. Tank and sump should be ready sometime mid to end of November. Any thought on dimensions? I am missing one last detail, should I have two overflows, one to the right and one to the left OR one overflow off-centered to one side?
