Reeferhead's 150DD Build

Yeah Dave, I've had horrible luck with fish since starting this system. In the past I never used QT and never had any problems. Now, it seems everytime I either skip or shorten QT, karma kicks me in the balls with Velvet. Not to mention whatever it was that killed all my wrasses. I'm almost to the point where I'm ready to go old school chadfarmer with the tank.

Could it be that the QT is part of the problem?

I don't see how. The velvet outbreak I had 6 months ago was in the jawfish tank. Those fish were not QT'd at all. I really think the issue this time around was that I didn't QT long enough to allow the copper suppressed disease show symptoms. Then the stress of adding the fish to the display and being pestered by the other fish really set it off.

QT all fish for at least 6 weeks! I'm going with 8 weeks from here on out with some added prophylactic treatments. If the LFS only runs therapeutic amounts of copper or if the fish hasn't been at the store long enough to receive a full treatment at full dosage than ick or velvet may not present themselves for weeks after purchase.

Wishing you luck man. This fish treatment you gotta go through seems like quite a process.

Thanks Bud, I'm nervous as hell over rushing all this for fish that aren't even showing symptoms yet but I know its the best course of action at this point. I wouldn't wish it on anyone but if you ever get a chance to witness velvet first hand you'll quickly realize that time is not on your side.

The other thing that sucks is that because I'm in such a hurry I had to run out to Petco and buy everything I needed new: tank, filter, etc. I wish I would have setup this hospital tank months ago and I could have went bargain hunting on here and CL. Plus, I would have been all setup and ready to go.

I'm sure you'll do it right. Now, on the other hand, if I had to do this, there might be cause for concern. :lmao:
Keep us posted.

PBT showed symptoms of ick today. It did not survive treatment. Details in the other thread.

Oh, and one of my Vortechs stopped working. It has not been a great reef week for me. :(

whats wrong with the vortech? I have never seen a PBT make it, I am sure that there are plenty, but not a very hardy fish in my book. gorgeous fish though...

Sorry to hear this Nick. Hopefully it turns around for you. I just added a pair of ORA Red Mandarins and skipped Qt. Hopefully it does not back fire on me.

They are certainly more sensitive than most but that particular fish was perfect, fat happy and never a spot... that is until I F'd it all up. :(

As far as the Vortech goes, I'm need to call tech support. It lights up red but doesn't run and reset or let me clear the memory.

Mandarins are pretty resistant to many of the more common diseases. However, if their CB and feeding on frozen and/or pellets I would have QT'd them anyway just to be safe. ORAs shouldn't starve in a bare QT tank like most wild caught mandarins. Where did you get them BTW? Really sweet fish.

I got the Vortech to start working again. I'm not really sure what exactly I did to "fix" it. I think the issue has something to do with the battery backup. I need to call Ecotech some weekday when I'm home and trouble shoot it.

The melenuras is dead. The two clowns seem to be doing ok in the hospital tank. The YWG isn't fairing as well but that fish is well over 8 years old, so I'm expecting the worse.
I couldn't catch two fish out of the display, a bartletts anthias and a orchid dottyback. They're still holding on but covered in spots and have stopped eating. It looks like I'll be starting from square one fish wise.

The two clowns, YWG, and bartlett's anthias are all doing well in QT. The orchid dottyback is the only fish left in the tank. The little guy isn't dumb enough to fall for the fish trap and does an amazing job of staying out of sight when I go hunting. I tore all the rock I could out of the tank and still couldn't figure out where he goes to hide. I'll get him eventually. ;) I haven't seen a spot of ick on any of the fish since the initial outbreak.

Once all the fish are treated I plan to get rid of them, let the tank run fallow for three months and start a new fish list... mostly fairy wrasses. Stay tuned.

The big deresa clam doesn't like to stay in one place. Over a period of several months it can travel from one side of the tank to another, breaking SPS along the way. So today I added a couple more pieces of LR to corral it in the center where I want it. I used my original method with the fiberglass rod to hold these pieces in place and elevate them above the sand. Drilling into the acrylic underwater was a bit of a PITA but we got it done. ;)

Updated FTSs with the new aquascape....

lookin good! If the vortech gives you problems again, let me know. I've got a wireless MP40 that will be sitting in a box for a while that you could use until you got it the bad one taken care of....

Thanks Kent, I discovered the AC/DC adapter for one of my battery backups was bad, the one the troublesome vortech was plugged into. I'm not sure why it messed the Vortech up but I haven't had any issues with the pump since disconnecting it from the battery.
