With the jawfish tank now cycling I'm starting to get around to some loose ends on the 150. One of the things I wanted to do from the beginning with this tank was keep all the walls of the tank free of coraline and other algae. Its all part of trying to create an illusion that nothing exists in the tank but the coral bommie and fish that live on it.
The glass is easy enough to keep clean with a magnet and scrapers and the Vortechs look good as new after a vinegar bath. However, the overflow is the real challenge. For those unfamiliar with Marineland overflows, there made of a slightly textured plastic (ABS perhaps) that is nearly impossible to keep free of coraline. The center panel is removable and can be cleaned outside of the tank but the majority of the overflow is essentially part of the tank.
Rather than fight it I decided to cover it with something that could be removed from the tank and easily cleaned with a vinegar bath. So here's what I did:
-1/4" black acrylic with routed slots for the bottom level suction. I kinda almost regret bothering with cutting these. 13" wide and 22.5" long, I wish I could have made it at least a inch longer but I was limited by the width of my oven.
-Plywood Form, not my best work but it served its purpose

I preheated the form in the oven at 325. Heated the acrylic for about 10 minutes. After a couple tries and a little help from Beth, I finished with this.

Finally, in the tank. Overflow? what overflow?

The black PVC elbows for the return should be in this week and then nothing foreign should stand out, except perhaps the nori clip. I'll need to work on that one
