ReefKeeper Elite

I have been a RKE owner and DA product owner for quite some time. Is anyone else out there about to give up on these products and make the switch to Neptune Apex?

I'm trying to way the cost benefit of doing this and obvisously it would cost more to switch, but I'm just not a patient person.

I am another that has been frustrated by DAs delays and "things take time" attitiude. The Apex is a great controller, has great built in features, and is made by a company that has been putting out new modules at a great pace.

What is it about the RK Elite that has you thinking about switching to Apex?

Gee... I've had the RKE since it first came out and have been very happy with it. It has always done everything I've expected of it.

It's the waiting for the software and the salinity probe that has been bugging me. I have had issues with the updates and problems with it shutting off randomly.

I moved on, I still have a salinity probe that does not work from 9 months ago, and they keep giving me excuses.

horrible customer service if you ask me!!!

+1 on the shutting off.

I have an APEX sitting at home waiting for me, my wife had to unplug my whole system and go back to the timers three weeks ago......= me no like DA

well my RKE has no issues but wish i could get better support as i have yet to hook up my net module. Maybe once the net module is up and running I will be 100 percent happy with the unit ..other than that I love the unit controls everything just the way i want it too. Matter of fact i have had an electrical problem with a brown out and the homeowners insurance is replacing my equipment so i can go from RKE to NEPTUNE but honestly I really like the easy settings of the RKE so I might just stay with them..salinity i can wait for since i have a pinpoint doing that for me right now ..as soon as the sl2 with salinity probe comes out i will be all over it..

<-------Happy Apex owner.

I switched. Even if DA did everything they are talking about they would be 2 years behind Neptune. In another month a lot of new stuff will be out form Neptune as well.(and unlike DA it isn't all talk, there will be new stuff very soon)

DA sucks
Neptune Rocks.

I'm definately making the switch this week. Luckily for me I didn't get in too terribly deep (I was about to) with all the add-ons. Apex is by far a superior controller.

I have been thinking the same thing all week about making the switch and than came across this thread. When I add up what I could sell my RKE and what I need with the APEX, the cost is too much for me to make the change.

I like the RKE and haven't had any issues with mine. I haven't tried MYReef Software yet, just waiting for the final product. I think once they release the Salinity Probe and APC, the wanting to switch bug will have passed with me.

Probably. At this pace you'll likely be 6 feet under by the time they finally get there.(considering the average life expectancy and the average number of delays in DAs launch dates) Neptune has a salinity probe working years ago.

Have you ever thought about getting Tunze or Vortex power heads? Ever thought about LED light? Take a look at the control options you have with the Neptune.

Guy with Reefkeeper, "**** I was getting 20 e-mails a minute until my e-mail account overloaded, my tanks at 85*F and climbing better run home and fix it."

Guy with Apex, "Lol, I get max one e-mail every 5 minutes and when I have an issue I can reprogram things and turn them off remotely. Looks like I'll be staying at the party and your driving home."

I also have owned and used DA products for a number of years. I still have an RK2 which I really like, but I switched all of my main tanks (all four of them) from an RKE to an Apex for control.

I too tired of waiting for bugs to be fixed, software to come out, firmware updates, and delays on module releases.

I really don't even want to get started on myReef 2.0,
but the facts alone pretty much cover it:

Late 2008 - announced for release "sometime in 2009"

Late November 2009 - delay announced until "first part" April 2010

May 2010- Beta released - no initial RKL support, NET module problems, some features turned off, various other bugs.

July 2010 - last update to the beta myReef 2.0 software, programmer takes time off.

October 2010 - last Beta build of myReef still from 1 July 2010 (almost 4 months ago).

The dated facts above do not bode well for a completed "non-beta" product to be available soon. I define "non-beta" as a software version that completely works with all the proposed and promised features activated. The current build (build 67 - 1 July 2010) still has a few bugs, some features turned off, and doesn't recognize the NET module.

A few personal notes on the dates above and my experience....
I took the "sometime in 2009" projected release date to mean sometime during the year, probably around the middle or in the fall, not Dec. 31st 2009, but to each his own interpretation for that statement. Then in Late November, DA announced they would not have the product out in 2009, which really ticked me off a bit, because to me it seemed they waited until the last minute to tell everyone during the holiday season that they wouldn't have it done in time, that it would be delayed almost 4 months.
Then in April, we get a web page telling us it is coming with a feature list, but it takes until the first part of May to start getting SIDs updated/returned and a Beta build posted. Many were incredibly dissatisfied with the initial beta. It lacked RKL support (finally added 6/22/10), had some NET problems, several features were turned off or not implemented yet, and there were a lot of bugs and problems for many users. I admit I set the bar really low for what to expect, but I felt like the software was still incredibly under-developed. Several other users noted this also, and some theorized that it had only been under development for a few months. For me, the trade off risk of running beta software, with few added features, just really wasn't worth the risk, and I became tired of being even the smallest bit hopeful in this never-ending saga. I tossed in the towel and switched....

I still have and use my RKE on one of my smaller tanks. I would say I am satisfied with it for what it is, but do not like it near as much as my Apex. Having to update each RKE module individually is a real pain, along with not being able to backup my programming. Some of the bugs in each firmware revision get really annoying and I sometimes get erratic behavior out of the unit. For what it is worth, I do think the new web interface looks nice.

I am just ready for a final version of the beta firmware and software that has been going on for the better part of a year now, if not longer. It appears like it will be going on for some time to come also. I just couldn't wait any longer for my main system. I had to give up and switch over, for which I have no regrets. I will probably continue to use the RKE I already have on my small tank it is currently on just because it is more economical than buying a whole Apex unit.

After using the RK2, the RKE, RKL, and Apex I really have to say the Apex is a stronger product, with less bugs, more features, better customer support, and a better track record of getting things to market in a timely fashion without considerable delays.

It seems that the prices between the two systems is equivalent, so for about the same price, I figured I can't go wrong with Apex. I didn't know about all the delays and customer service issues with DA, though, and didn't know how far behind they are in the game. I'm about to purchase the Apex and can't wait to receive it and also to see what's in store in terms of updates.

Neptune rocks.

Have to admit none of them are perfect. I thought the Neptune website was a royal pain. It seems they advertise their discontinued models more then the Apex. It made it a pain to figure out what it was I needed. Ended up having to e-mail them and they were very helpful.

From where I stand it seems that:
- DA spent their money on advertising.
- Neptune spent their money on a solid product.

The graphs the ReefKeeper makes as of currently are better then the Apex. There should be an update coming up for the Apex in the next month that will change this though.

I hated the fact that I could know my tank was in trouble and know what to do with the RKE in order to get things to be fixed, but wouldn't be able to do anything remotely.

I switched to the Apex and have been absolutely thrilled with it. I have called Neptune a couple of times for tech support on other peoples' Apex units and service was top notch (Neptune people are super nice as well!). The web interface works so well on the Apex I use my computer for everything but activating the feed timer. I use the app by HeneryH here at RC on my Droid, even used the droid app to change water a few months ago when I was out of town on business.

DA--let's just say they could use some customer service training (IME) and stop announcing deadlines they have no intention of meeting. Too bad they have fallen so far behind because competition makes better products for us consumers.
