Hey Guys,
I installed a year old Reeflo Baracuda 4500GPH pump in my 220 last night. I'm getting a funky grinding noise... Check out the Video Below... Any suggestions??

My buddy I bought this from insists some sand is on the propeller.... The sound doesnt sound like it's coming from there though, it sounds like its coming from the plumbing... When I reduce the flow coming from my sump, the noise vanishes...
Any thoughts??

Thanks in advance,

Steve

it sounds like air bubbles in the union or in the valve. I got a brand new barracuda gold that sounds like your so I redo all the plumb-work before and after the pump. no problems after that.

Would you believe this was the culprit!! 2 Rubber Suction cups!!

Thanks for the help guys!!

man, I have to say that stranger things can happen in this hobby! :headwally:

btw, I just watch again your video and have you thought to use something like a strainer in the pump inlet inside the sump? may this action can prevent "things" like this.

Hello,
Glad you found your problem those are great pumps too i have Darts:) You can install an elbow on the inside of your sump, on your pump inlet so it sucks off the bottom maybe an inch up+-.

I noticed a couple things on your setup that I'm not sure you are aware of...

You never want to reduce the intake on a pump (I'm assuming the ball valve is there for when you have to service the pump)

In the vid closing the valve I'm sure was trouble shooting...

But, and maybe it's just the way it looks in the vid, it looks like the tank bulkhead/plumbing is smaller than the 2" intake on that pump. If so it will have a large impact on the performance (including noise level) and longevity of the pump.

did it solve the prob. im new to reef but not to pumps, it kind of sounde like alot of air in the line if your riser has a vent it will help to get all the air out fast and effectively and that alone cand make a rattleing sound
