Mikes (reefspecialty) auto-shutoff is a great idea. I got one because I cant afford the divorce if the tank floods. Well worth the money on this or any other skimmer.

I was going to go with an insump skimmer until I came across it.

I need to vent!

Skimmer arrived in great condition, all is good there.

BUT......

The black collar threads into the output of the pipe fine with plenty of teflon tape, but that silly slip fitting, with the 2 o-rings, I cannot get to stop leaking! The one on the intake is fine, no problem there.

The union from the skimmer body to the pump is slightly off and it's tweaking that leaking connection. I either get a leak from the union or between the threaded fitting and the slip connection.

Any tips? I have the feeling i'm in for a long night.

 for Mike at Reef Specialty. I gave him a call (even though I didn't buy the skimmer from him) and he was happy to tell me what I needed to do in order to stop the leaks. So far so good. :) I post some pics later on tonight.

Thanks MIKE!!!

klasiksb,

My 250's unions were off just a little as well, but went together easily with just a little persuasion.

I'm glad Mike was able to help you. What was the fix?

Looking forward to seeing the pics!

The fix was to remove the pump from the skimmer body, both the inlet and the output. He recommended either silicone grease or vaseline and to put it all over the threads of the unions on the skimmer bodies input/output going to the pump. Then put each union together until they both grab, then alternate turning them on until both are tight. Fixed it right up and the unions went together much nicer.

For the break in period, I am feeding it with a Mag 2. I'll either connect a drain to it or add a larger feed pump after it has broken in.

It's huge! Didn't like the fact I had to fart around with it for over an hour dealing with leaks. It is built like a brick $#!@ house though, I like that. Real quiet, both pump and air intake. Pump isn't real warm. Makes my Octo NW200 look like a turd from the Reeflo 250.

klasiksb

I ran into the same thing....too lazy to go get vaseline....

it is the inlet into the bottom of the sump that is leaking.

Leaked like a sive...the other one is fine so i wont mess with it.......tomorrow night project I guess

I am going to put a manual together on the secrets of this sump and charge 5.95 for it....of course all procedes go to Mike at reefspeciality.

Ok I just went through like 20 pages of the thread and have found a couple of refrences to the Ozone upgrades, but I havn't seen where to purchase or get more information. Any help? I'm really interested in this as I have been wanting to add ozone for some time and am still on the fence. If this is a decent upgrade for the skimmer it may just push me over.

That float switch is a def. purchase. I myself have never had an overlfow yet, but I'm sure it will happen sooner or later. Better safe than sorry.

Hurley give Mike @ Reef Specialty a call. He can tell you how to mod your skimmer for Ozone. He just went over it with me last night.

skimmer is running but the water goes to the top of the neck
and then comes down 4-5 inches......comes up...and then down....is that due to the drain tube not being perfectly level?

The rest of you made more progress than I did. The pump is all assembled and most of the stand pipe assembly. I need to pick up some hose and other fittings, drill a hole in my rubbermaid sump, and its too late to go to Lowes tonight. Its funny, but I have a large rubbermaid container filled with almost every size of miscellaneous PVC fittings and never seem to have the right one. I am very impressed with the way the skimmer is constructed. I should have it up and running tomorrow night.

Working during the day gets in the way of my fun!

klasiksb, thanks for sharing the information on the leaks. I'll use a bit of vaseline as a preventative measure before I add water.

kingsland: I sent you a PM about your pond pump setup.

Replied, if you have more questions, let me know.

update:

Came down to water all over the flow...apparently the "T" was not tightened down sufficiently......probably what the problem was...wife is ****ed......She said I told her the skimmer was leak proof....well...I havent hooked up the float valve yet and it still wouldnt have helped.....

Well, I couldn't resist, I had to squirt a little skimmate in the skimmer. Shortly after, it had a nice dirty foam head on it. Still have the drain wide open.
