Just put in a set of these bulbs, and my reef looks pink. Is that the normal color of the bulb?

400w
3 things: First the reeflux 10k can look kind of pink. Second the nipple on the inner bulb needs to be between the 12 o'clock and 3 o'clock position to get the most blue and less pink. 3rd they need close to 100 hours to burn into their true color.

Have you had any experience with the 12k Reeflux? From what I've read they put out almost as much par as the 10ks but have a huge spike at the 420n. giving the bulb a nice blue hue. Just wondering if they were as good as everyone says they are. Im trying to decide whether to go with the 10s or 12s my self...

My understanding is that the 12000K reeflux takes a pretty big hit in par. That seems to hold true for the SE versions according to Sanjays site. There is no DE info.
But for both the 150 and 250 watt DE versions, I have read many times that the 12K's give up alot of par. The 10K's have a large blue spike, a smaller one in the actinic range and then additional spikes around the 540 and 590nm ranges. This is what Coralvue told me when I asked about them before I bought them. The plots for the SE versions back this up.

The 250 watt 10000K DE's are really nice bulbs. I like them. Despite those warmer color spikes they have a nice blue tint but it looks a little closer to actinic blue (purpleish) than the usual blue. I dont know if this is what is described as pink but mine never looked like what I would describe as pink. They are especially nice with some T5 supplementation.

Not even close when it comes to par, 10k's are over 90 PPFD while the 12k's are a little over 50 PPFD on the 250w with electronic ballasts.

I bought 3 10k's to put in my Luminarc reflectors and with the liminarcs it was really too much. I have since switched to the 12k's and I'm seeing good growth and improvement in color in all my SPS in 3 weeks time. If you don't have a really deep tank you may not need all the par of the 10k's.

That pic is a very fair representation of what mine look like in the Luminarcs. Much brighter and much whiter than the ones I've seen in other reflectors, although even in a lesser reflector they still look very good.

My 250w Reeflux 10 ks looked pink. Didn't notice at the beginning but later I did. Just upgraded to 400w XM 20ks. A little blue for me but I think they will work well for now.

WOW!! :eek1: Thats what Im talking about... How deep is this tank? Mine is 30" would the 12ks work for me or should I go with the 10ks?

One of my Reeflux 10K bulbs looked pink at first but I just kept rotating the bulb until the colors matched. I wish someone could explain how nipple position makes a difference but it really does.

If you're using really good reflectors I think they would work. With poor reflectors you might be limited in the bottom half of the tank. JMO

Just got my 400w 10k Reeflux and let me say compared to the XM 10k they have 10xs better color. Im not sure how the PAR ratings stack up to the XM10ks, but the color difference is second to none. I do see a lil pink as described above. I haven't ran them for 100hrs yet, but I am unable to get the 'nipple' straight up on one. On both bulbs no matter what position you put them in to start they always end up in the same position once screwed in tightly. On one the nipple is almost straigt up and the other is just the opposite, its almost straight down.

How do I get it to point up? Can I rotate the mogul socket? I have tried for a good 1/2hr to get it screwed in to where the nipple is pointed up.... any suggestions????

chopsuey what you will have to do is with the lights off & unplugged. Unscrew your bulb then take a flat head screw driver and lift up the metal contact that runs to the middle of the socket. This is what contacts the bulb. As long as this piece has contact with the bulb you do not have to screw it all the way in. You will have to play around with it I sometimes screw it in until it's tight and back it out until the nipple is up or screw it in till I feel the bulb gets snug. Hope this helps. :)

10k 250 DEs here and they are PINK.
Won't be buying these bulbs again they make my tank look disgusting.

That's just too weird. Mine were never pink, on ARO eballast or Blue Wave VII HQI. They have a bit of an actinic hue more than a blue but they arent pink. When you look at the bulbs you see a distinct blue tint too. They never were pink either, not even before 100 hours. Weird. Must be a QC thing.
