Reefstock March 8th at the Curtis Hotel

We had it for a year and a half and the the women I got it from had it for 5 years, but I'm sure she got it from someone else who had it for years etc......

Still miss it, but I have to leave an 18" area around it (it was 12-18" extended) due to it's tenticles that loved to sting.

Wait... let me get this straight. An official CLUB event, that is all about promoting the hobby, and friendship with no "mandatory" contribution to the sponsoring body? What a concept! A reef club just getting together, with no drama to promote sharing and swapping the bounty that we raise in our little glass- or acrylic boxes! That kinda reminds me why I got involved in RMRC in the beginning.

Now wait a minute. I think my opinion on which method I prefer is obvious BUT you cant just paint with a broad brush here. Circumstances have been such that DARC got a location where they can put on a real live respectable frag swap without paying for it. Doing a Kmart swap out of my garage once in a while if fine but it can't compete with having the space to allow people to bring in a lot of equipment of invite vendors. But you gotta understand that even holding a swap in my garage cost money. I make sure there are drinks and snacks or whatever and I cover that out of my pocket so the club can make some money. I'll do at least some for the upcoming swap.

This is a fluke, being able to hold a swap of this size without someone having to put a lot of money out upfront. That allows the luxery of placing sellers (or buyers) on the honor system to toss a little profit towards DARC. If they don't turn a profit it isn't the end of the world but hopefully that wont be the case because it would be nice to have the $$$ to fund the next event.

If you want good events they do have to be paid for. I might take issue with methods or how much emphisis is placed on fundraising but not the fact it needs to be done.

I wasn't here for the original breakup that led to the friction around here so I don't know exactly what happened. I have heard enough stories from people on both side to know there is a lot of animosity that needs to be delt with. You guys are missing a opportunity to have a really good thing.

I agree Grim, its a shame that egos and bylaws get in the way of a hobby that we love...although I missed the reefstock event I heard enough from the people who attended that I will be planning on attending the next event. Thanks to everyone involved!

Alright emergency group hug.............

At 10:30 everyone hug your monitor, and let the calming thoughts flow....................................................................

All the tension IS from a SELECT FEW on both sides ,other than that... As a board member I dont see it from our end(board members) & the select few from our end arent even premium members of RMRC & we should'nt let them dictate on how we run our clubs. We as board members from all 3 clubs need to focus on that & progress from there & not let the select few cloud our judgement for having an event sponsored together.

OK..... I feel much better now! :)

Unfortunately I missed ReefStock, having been underwater in Papua New Guinea at the time. I heard that it was a great event with some minor road bumps.

So, applying what I learned in the corporate world early in my career, we'll place blame on the guy who didn't attend the meeting. I hereby accept all blame and apologize to those who went un-fed, un-prized and un-fragged.

Credit goes to Jake for taking the financial risk of putting this together; the great folks from SCMAS who worked hard to get the frag tanks setup and coordinating the events and the fabulous DARC and RMRC folks who showed up in unexpected numbers.

With the invitation out for everyone to come play at the DARC Frag Swap in April (RMRC, DARC and SCMAS), let's concentrate on making the Front Range a great place for those of us who like keeping containers full of salt water.

I can't believe you'd rather be diving in Papua New Guinea than attend a reefing function in Denver.

Well put Grim,
I do know that throwing events does have a price. I just like the fact that when possible DARC and SCMAC try to put on swaps and events that are free, or as close as possible. The clubs just have a much more "laid back" and casual feel than some others. To each their own!

Let's see, with the lunch buffet, snacks, room and speaker expenses, the ReefEd conferrence we put on cost about $55 per person. We charged our members $10 and non-members $30. I would say that's "as close as possilbe" to free. We basically just had our members reimburse us for their food costs and paid for everything else from membership income and past frag swap proceedes.

We have the word out for no-cost locations for our frag swaps to see if we can avoid admission charges in the future. We have plenty of other events and meetings for which there are no admission fees. At previous swaps, we charged a $5 admission to non members, still not a lot of money, and members got in free.

You may not agree with having Premium Membership fees, which is fine. But we do our best to make our events affordable and we make sure to spend any moneys collected for memberships or at our swaps for putting on educational activities such as ReefEd.
