no. dont try to keep sps or clams. no, dont mix sps, lps, clams, and softies. your flirting with disaster!
start with softies, and possibly lps if you dont kill any of your softies! i dont think your set up to deal with large scale chemical warfare. keep it simple. trust me!

Once you have been successful with the mushrooms, trumpets, zoa's, star polyps etc.. and by that I mean you have kept them healthy with good growth for at least a year (you should be able to frag some off to the local LFS for some credit :) ) then you could try you hand with some advanced corals.
Keep a log of your tanks growth and challenges over that time so you learn from any mistakes and it also keeps you honest and working the tank, instead of getting lazy and chasing the skirts. You will need that kind of discipline if you are going to graduate to the harder coral species.

How's the tank set-up coming along this week?

yeah, lets stay off the topic of "tank set-up" for a while. i dont think theres gonna be much progress anytime soon!
rumlads right. you should deffinatly try your hand at the easier corals first, and achieve an extended period of success before trying to move into the intermediate coral keeping. and like he said, success isnt determined by being able to keep a mushroom alive for 4 weeks! you need to aim for long term success, and success doesnt just mean keeping the corals alive, but having your corals thrive! if you were to start with a hand full of mushrooms and zoanthids now, you should have 5 handfulls in a year from now! not only will they multiply, but they will grow quite large as well! (not neccesarily the zoanthids, but the mushrooms) so when you start to see asexual reproduction, and growth of your softies, you know your reaching a level of success that will warrant the upgrade of your novice status, to a more intermediate level of coral keeping. if i were you i would stay away from anything with a skeleton while becoming accustomed to reef keeping. 3 good begginers corals would be mushrooms, zoanthinds, and xenias! they are very easy to care for, and come in a wide veriety of colors to choose from. (except xenia) all being quik spreaders if given the right conditions. so, if you do achieve any level of success while keeping these three types of corals, it will be noticeable by looking into the tank. if you do it right, your tank will be completely full in a year!
what i would suggest doing at this stage, is buying books, and reading them the whole way through. if you havent already? good books are going to be your best friend! not only for knowledge and a better understanding of what your doing, but you can referance them later on also. there are so many good books today that its hard to wonder why even a begginer would go wrong in the hobby?
have you read any books on the subject of reef keeping?

As for the tank everything is going good next week i will be going to LFS to get the rest of the rock i need. Thanks for the response by the way. I will try to get some books and as for the corals i think ill try the zooanthinds and some mushrooms first and then if i have good growth over a period of time then maybe i will go to the LPS just for future references what are some easy LPS corals.

speaking from experience, ive had very good luck with the euphyllia species of lps. ( hammer, frogspawn) there may be some better cantidates for first time lps. like i said, you should really invest in at least a couple of good long books to get you aquainted with some of the easier to keep spieces of corals.
another thing to keep in mind is that, what works good for your softies, may not work well for your lps. just a thought.

yes i will definitely get some books to read. I was always a huge fan of hammers and frogspawns so after i try some zoos and mushrooms i will try some of them.

today i came home and the plumbing at the top of my sealing was leaking shut everything off. I still have to fix it though.

Do you mean the plumbing was leaking at the ceiling (the top of the basement) or at a place where two pipes meet (the seal)?

And yes, you will have to fix that.

I just read all 15 pages. Here's what I think:

Reeftank6 is a little goby.
Melev is a Royal Dottyback.
Rumlad is a Clown Trigger.
Chrismunn is a Great White Shark.

This kid either has really thick skin or cries himself to sleep at night.

Seriously kid, learn to spell and construct a sentence. One day you'll want to leave Pennsylvania.

Melev is a Royal Dottyback.

There were some hoses connecting the HOB to the sump, if I recall. Should be a really quick fix, no?

LOL Rumlad this will be an easy fix i will do this today. As for the hoses near the top of my basment there are beams every 1ft or 2 of space and the hoses are connected in there so you cant see them when i take pictures or anything.

ok question for you guys. When your water evaporates u put in freshwater then after awhile your salt level goes down. Do you guys add more salt?
