Filled the tank a week ago using a cheap oceanic hydro, while ordering the refrac, rated for saltwater, from Dr. Fosters. The hydro read alittle above 35ppm.Broke out the refrac, and that thing read 35ppm on the nose.:lol2:
I always used a cheap Red Sea hydrometer for making my water change water, so fast and easy.
Then I got an Australian Ultra Gold Hammer about 6", and put it in, and immediately it looked bad. Seeing massive dollar signs begin flying around I bought the D-D Refractometer made for ocean water....
Found my salinity at .030!
I tried getting away with the cheap route and it nearly cost me an extremely expensive coral.
Mine was spot on accurate compared to a friends MD Refrac about 2 months after I bought it, but 1 year later even with normal cleanings it went askew..
They might be accurate out of the box, but I would never trust one over 6 months old again.
