Refractometer reading

Hey guys,...since the day i bought it my refractometer reads like this (excuse the really quick sketches)

so i never really know Exactly what my salinity is.

Shouldnt it read smth like this ?

mine is a solidcolor line, not really 2 tone like yours. mine is the one from DIYREEF

So it looks like the second picture not the first right ?

This is the one i have,..seems like a lot of people use it too. Strange....

You need to hold it up to a brighter light like MH or the sun, it looks like yours is diffracting the weaker wavelengths and not giving a crisp reading. Also, if you look through glasses it happens, are you using the focus ring and setting a sharp focus?

Interesting. I will try a brighter light source. Yes i am tweaking the focus,..that doesnt seem to make a difference.

if i drop the water on and look immediately it looks likt teh second pic, i the longer i wait the more it looks like the first. HTH
