Why distilled water on daylight plate before using? Does it have to be distilled water?

You use distilled water to calibrate the refrac. to zero, that way you have baseline to start out with.

They probably want you to calibrate it before use. I use RO/DI water for calibration. In fact i have never used distilled on one ever and they seem to work fine.

I use saltwater refracs. and coolant refracs. everyday at home and work. I check the calibration on mine about once a week. Temperature changes can throw them out more than anything else.
