Refractor: How to Use?

You'll need to calibrate it using a high quality standard other than fresh RO/DI. The refractos are generally made for salt water, not sea water, which has lots of different ions in it in addition to NaCl. I've got some calibration solution I can bring to the next meeting. In fact, anyone who wants to calibrate their refractos, bring them to the next meeting at c_stowers house and we can make sure things are reading right.

Sweet! Then you can show me what I am looking for exactly when trying to get my water to say, 1.019sg.
"...Why 1.019sg," you say?

Well since you asked, check out this link: URL=http://www.melevsreef.com/phytoplankton.html]Culture Your Own[/URL]

Keep us updated, bro!

Here's mine:

I followed Marc's website recipe, too, and I've had about 3 very successful harvests. It just gets darker and darker until I decide its time to split again. :)

Nice lookin' phyto, Brandon!

Here's a pic of what a refracto should look like when you look through it. You don't want the "brix" scale, but the one that has ppt and specific gravity (sg). You'll want the sg to be at 1.019.

If you bring your refracto to the meeting, I can take a look at it there to help you out.

its alive!...its alive!!...its alive!!!

CTop, thanks for the cool picture. Yeah, my refractor has a completely different scale inside of it... hope you can still help. I will bring it the 17th.

NeveSSL, That is some dark green juice! Where did you get your starter culture? And have you split your batch at seven days??

Yeah, it gets pretty dark, man! I got my starter culture from rcmike who started his from a bottle of DT's Phyto. :) I can bring you some of this if you'd like.

Oh, and I usually wait 2 to 4 weeks before I split... just depends on how quickly it gets dark. I've been doing some different splits and things lately trying to get more going. That means I have more cultures, but with less phyto in each. Etc, etc. :)

Jack, thanks for the refractometer calibration water! I am going to try and sell my brix scale refractometer on ebay and pick up one with a salinity scale.
