Refugium Plumbing

i would suggest splitting your drain line with a T, one going into the refugium section and one going into the skimmer section, both then overflowing into the middle with is your return section
 
I doubt it really matters.

The only thing I'd be careful of is moving bubbles from the DT overflow through the refugium (and maybe that's not a problem...) The recirculated refugium design is more resistant to this, but both designs can be made to work using a variety of methods.

I really can't think of any reason why one design would be clearly better than the other in the general case.
