refugium question

I have a 40 gallon sump with a large refugium area, was wondering what should i put in the fuge and the benefits it provides for a reef tank?

I usually add a sandbed and some LR rubble. You can also place macro algae in it if there is lighting. The benefit is that it acts as a safe haven for many of the smaller critters that are beneficial to your tank.

Put some chaeto macro algae in there on some LR and also a sand bed if you want, chaeto helps export nitrates and phosphates.

is the tank going to have SPS or LPS. You could use Marc Weiss' Funky old reef mud or FORM. Or you gould use Eco systems Miracle mud. They both feed your tank with natural elements and nutrients but it is somewhat of an overload for SPS tank. Your water will also have a yellow tinge. If just LPS its great.

My tank is going to be mostly sps, zoas, and few lps.

I would stick with a shallow sand bed with some rubble and chaeto for your macro.
