Do you need a cleaning crew for the refugium? anything else other than sand, rock and macro algae?

Interesting question, I also wonder:
What about detrivores that keep sand clean? Or it is a non-issue for refugims?

I wouldnt personally have a cleaning crew in ur refuge, the od snail wont hurt...

the whole idea of a refuge is a place where pods, etc.. can grow and multiply in order to feed the display tank and help things like Mandarins with a source of food.. so having somein in the sump that would eat these would defeat the point.. the only thing I have is a Urchin to keep the sodding cheato growth under control, and even he cant keep up..

urchins eat chaeto?

would snails or hermits eat the pods?,

what about having seahorses in there?

An urchin might eat Chaetomorpha. Unless the refugium is large, I wouldn't put one int here. Many snails would be fine. Hermits are definitely predatory. The seahorses would eat a lot of copepods, etc, but that might be fine. I'd recommend checking in the seahorse forum for information on those animals, since they are pretty demanding.
