Refugium

After being advised by a well known marine shop that a wet dry sump filter is the old way of doing things I have now replumbed my entire tank with my skimmer being in line from the overflow to the sump and then I have replaced the sump with a refugium. In the refugium at the moment I have two T5 lights, coral gravel and 6 kg of live rock. With all the changes and moving rock around etc my tank has become a little off colour. How will this sort its self out bearing in mind that I no longer have a filter as such. My tank is 500l and my sump about 150l. My water seems to have a bit of a yellow colour with small white particles in suspention. The tank has been running for 2 day and it is not clearing very well. Before the change the water was crystal clear. I still have no fish or coral although the tank has been running for 6 weeks now.

have you tried running carbon in the system?

You could try putting a sock filter over the drain output until it clears up.

was your gravel new? if so, did you rinse it before you added it to your tank? Both above ideas would be good. But cost money. If you are not in any hurry, the cheaper method would be to just wait. Your tank will clear up. Just give it some more time. But having carbon is never a bad thing. Even if you don't use it now, You might want to use it later.

Great I will try the carbon as soon as I can get some. How much sand and what else should I have in my refugium

might have stirred up diatoms and youre seeing a bloom. That might explain the yellow water. Grazing snails, and a mechanical filter (sock) over the outflow would help clear that up a bit.

HI bushmen, as for sand you hould have about 10-15cm of sand and you should grow some sort of macro algae ( travis from sa reefkeeping)
