Refugium

Update seeing how I have got no replies I guess I have not made my self very clear I am wondering if the flow rate is to slow and with the trouble I am having with Diatoms and Brown algae.
I have updated the pics to show the plumbing and have to redo anyway because I need to turn the return pump because when I turn the flow up it comes out right where the return pics up.

What light are you using, my refugium was disgusting when I was using a kessil that I hated. I switched to a simple par38 from lowes and refugium is good.

Always something to think about because I really don't know all I know is that I keep fighting Diatoms and its not a new tank 1 1/2 years old. So along with the water tests I am pulling the hair out my head

It can be hard to tell from a photo, but I'm pretty sure that's not diatoms. I'm less sure whether it's dinoflagellates or not. But it could be. Mine always seemed to want to grow toward the surface like it wants to float (due to gas trapped in it). And if I stirred up the tank it would break up and make a huge mess.

I'd drain the sump, toss the water, wash the sump out with something that kills, like Hydrogen peroxide, vinegar or dilute muriatic acid (at 10:1 it's cheaper than vinegar and can be made stronger if you need it). Rinse it good, put it back in the stand, fill it with new saltwater and 1ml of hydrogen peroxide for every 10g of water in the sump and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then fire up the pump and let it go.

Dinos can be really tough to get rid out of the system. I had to do this kind of treatment 3 times in 4 or 5 weeks. It's now been 6 months with no issues. BTW, 1ml of hydrogen peroxide per 10g in the sump will help kill algae in the sump, but when flushed into the rest of the tank it will barely have any effect... maybe you'll only have to clean the tank glass half as often!

Good luck.

Thank You I will need it. I don't have any corals right now. I took all the Live rock out about a month ago and cleaned up the best I could. I finally have my Stenner pump hooked up so I can change a gallon a day which would be 30% I believe I have about 90 gallons total and the system. Water changes don't seem to do a thing for it.
In the pictures you can see my refugium. It doesn't seem healthy to me and I was thinking that I should repopulate it what do you think?
I am also read that you can raise the pH to like 8.6 right now I am just barely at eight what do you think there.
Thank you I'm going to get everything together and do what you said I need to do some re-plumbing on my return pump because the way it set up I have to take a whole thing apart to take it out replace it or clean it.
Thanks again any more help you can give me would be appreciated
Phil
