Refugiums and Pods

Hi folks.

My first post here. I've done FW for a number of year and I've been reading up on doing a SW tank for about 2 years on this forum and some other sites. I have a 40g breeder FW tank with Discus/Plecos and a 100g FW tank with Cichlids. My wife finally told me, "Just go ahead and do it. You've been talking about it for so long!"

Anyway, so about 2 weeks ago I went out and bought a RO/DI system and 2 holding tanks for wastewater/RO water. I bought a refractometer. I bought salt (LFS only had Instant Ocean so I went with that), pumps, bulkheads, maxi-jets, a skimmer, a nova t-5 extreme fixture, SW test kits.

I'm going to set up a 10g display with a 10g sump and a 10g refugium. I know that's kind of a weird setup, but I had those 3 tanks on hand so I figured I would use them. I already drilled the glass for my sump return and built an overflow box. If all goes well, I'm going to talk my wife into setting up a 300+g system (already have 2 100g stock tanks for sumps that I bought under the guise of raising "feeder fish"... Told you I've been planning this for a while. :D )

So thats my introduction... Now my question is what is everyone's feeling on having the refugium below the display tank in regards to pods? My stand has spots for both the sump and the refugium. They fit perfect under the tank with plenty of room above them for access.

I'm going to add LR/LS to the display tank with a SSB. And I'm going to add chaeto to the fuge and eventually pods. The problem is that I've been reading about pumps chewing up pods. One site I read said return pumps in the fuge kill 95% of pods. Anybody know if thats true or just an exaggeration? Would returning to the display via a submerisble pump or a powerhead kill the least pods? Does it even make a difference?

That's been my only question I haven't found the answer to yet. I'm in the plumbing stage so I'm trying to get things set up as efficient as I can.

Thanks,
Richard

Richard,
[welcome]

Sounds like your off to a great start, as far as pods becoming blender mush, don't worry, plenty make it thru without problems.
