its really a matter of preference... dsb's can be very very helpful in nutrient export if setup proerly and deep enough (at least 4") and is NEVER disturbed... though not everyone chooses this method... but as to where it will work, it can go in your fuge or your display if you should choose to go this route... sand or other types of substrate are a home and breeding ground for pods and other critters, which is one of the main reasons to have a fuge in the first place.
I have a 125 gal. with a 50 gal. sump/refug. and I have approx. 6" of live sand in both. The DT has live sand from a reef area and my sump/refug. has sugar/powder size from sea grass beds and this supplies almost all the microscopic food for my filter feeders and zoos for my corals and fish along with my live rock. Every 2 or 3 yrs. I'll add 5 lbs. of new live sand to both. Been this way for 16 yrs and still going strong.
