Regal Angel Primer

Fwiw I have done fairly well with the LA Maldives's orange belly juvenile regals. Since I have plenty of LR I use it in lieu of a sterile tank.

So I just ordered a 3" Red Sea regal and am getting my QT ready with some extra live rock I have kept ready for this purchase. This is my first regal so I want to see what others have done for this fish. My normal protocol is to begin my new fish with TTM and prazi right away then formalin dip and into the QT tank but I am nervous to do this with the regal. What do others do for the QT of this fish? Velvet and ick have decimated my tanks in the past so I am super careful with my QT now.

Here is my beauty [emoji4][emoji4][emoji4]. It is approx 4,5inch long and it has been in QT for 1,5 months now. Treated with 2 doses of Prazi and has been in observation as I am hesitant to put it through copper. It is eating pellets, flakes, frozen, you name it [emoji4].

For mine I did formalin on arrival. Then treated the qt with prazi. Then once it was eating well I did TTM just before transferring it to the display. I think getting it eating well is more important than worrying about clearing any possible ich as long as it is not visably infected.

Awesome eating response! Job number one for me will be getting it on pellets so I can feed while traveling. I'll be home for the next month which is rare so I pulled the trigger now. It seems most people put it in QT with prazi first then after a while of observation do ttm and into the display. I'll try that approach unless others have different experience and successes with other approaches.

Perfect. Thanks! I'll try this since it lines up with my normal protocol just different timing. I'll do pics once it's here and settled!

I would agree with you if did not have any other fish in my display [emoji4]. Given I have a couple of sensitive fish like a Powder Blue Tang and others I am a bit weary. TTM would be great, but unfortunately I work abroad so it is not a possibility for me.

He is eating like a pig so that part at least is not a concern.

I am tempted to risk and introduce him at the end of a 2 month QT. I know some fish can have temporary immunity but not sure it would be possible to go through all the stress of being bagged, placed in a sterile QT, treated with chemicals (Prazi) and remain in observation for 2 months and still not be affected if it carried the parasite... hopefully [emoji51]. Hope I do not regret these words...

Hope you are lucky with yours as well [emoji4]. Mine was already eating pellets at the store so I was really lucky. That protocol seems good. I would probably keep it in observation after TTM just to make sure it does not carry Velvet (TTM is not effective on Velvet due to different parasite lifecycle). Obviously these things are always on a case by case. If he is still not eating after TTM your best chance could be to put it in a mature Reef tank (provided no aggressive fish are around to harass him). Or he is eating well but you want to fatten him up a bit before moving to the display tank to give him a chance against your aggressive feeders (Anao's, Chromis,...). Again, case by case.

Best of luck!

Thanks! Yeah I am well aware of velvet and what that beast can do. It will be in a QT for a while to make sure it's eating a wide range of foods and is fat and healthy. I have all kinds of Meds just in case too from various outbreaks and subsequent strict QT I now do. I have torn apart the tank twice now over the years bec of not doing the right QT protocol and I don't want that to ever happen again.

For this guy I'll do formalin bath then QT observation with some live rock I have kept in a tub gathering algae and pods to fatten him up. Once I feel ready and it's eating sufficiently, or if obviously needed, I'll do prazi for a few rounds. Then, lastly I'll do TTM and into the display. It will be a lengthy process I'm sure haha

Regal came in today super fat which is a relief! Slightly bigger than then the 3-4" listing though but that's ok. I put it through a quick formalin dip and into the QT. I offered some frozen and it investigated but didn't bite. I rubbed some mastic into the live rock to hopefully get it to graze. I'll let it be for now since I am sure it was a long 24 hours for her (my assumption since the spine is small or it's just too young to tell since it has a bar still not connected).

Beautiful!

So I want to get a pair for my 180 Mostly SPS Reef. I have a 40 gallon QT. Do you QT and treat these guys like other fish? Hypo/copper and Parazipro? I prefer hypo and Parazipro because it is much less stressful for the fish.

i do copper and general cure to get the praziquantel sans oxybispropanol to minimize issues. hypo only works on certain strains of ich. with velvet as wide spread as it is now a days i'd rather cover my bases for both all strains of ich and velvet. then a month in quarantine without meds continuing to develop and get a consistent positive response and eating habits and association with food and human while away from competition. has worked very well for me with maldives and red sea regals.
