Regal Angel Primer

I wonder if he's eating when the lights are out. He is just merrily cruising around the tank and ignoring every morsel that I put in front of him. How long can he go without eating? It's been 5 days since I received him now.

I don't think these guys are used to eating out of the water column and they have to learn it with time.

I would try a live clam or mussel on a half shell.

some (quite a few) never do.
Big reason why I haven't tried one. I have yet to find "the one" :)

Something I've had work a couple times in qt was to put in another small fish like a neon goby, etc. Then thye start to learn that stuff you drop in is food. This of course assues you QT!

Here is mine at the almost 1 year mark.

szwab,

I feel the same way you do. You might as well go to a casino and throw your money away. Same result. :)

nope!!!

that would be more fun :lmao:

Out here in Wyoming, there isn't alot of "fresh" seafood.

I had very good luck with rubber banding food items to the inside half of an empty clam shell. The shell really got his attention. Some partially cooked broccoli (limp but not to the point that the head falls apart in the water) worked. A raw shrimp that was peeled and one end minced up a little and the other end rubber banded to the shell worked as well. I even rubber banded some of those algae disks for bottom feeders as well.

Good luck.

I bought a 2 Inch Juvi today at my local store here in Central New Jersey... The sales guy said he was picking at some live brine, so I hope this is a good sign... I'm going to pick him up next week....

This guy was eating mysis out to the water column for 2 weeks when I bought him. As in the entries I put in earlier, we had a shipping diseaster that nearly lost ever thing in the box. His bag leaked all but 1/2" of water, leaving him half in and half out. I got him into the QT without any acclimation (no water to acclimate to). He revived and has been doing OK other wise. Last night he started picking on the LR that I put in the QT. He still looks great though. I am hopeful still.
I have tried the clam trick. I did get his attention, but nothing more.

Went back to the LFS today... Looks like the Specimen is Indian Ocean... They claim the red Sea regals are very scarce these days, and very expensive..... This fish looks like it has good coloration... Also he is eating Mysid Shrimp at the store.....

At the moment Red Sea stuff is non-existant in the UK, a bit is coming out of the Sudan but is very expensive!!!

Well, I picked up the fish... My 2 tangs, Kole and Dej Sailfin made themselves known quickly... Not nipping or attacking, but they swim right up to him and wiggle around.... I turned the lights off right after... Also at the store today, he ate Mysid very well... ate around 10-12 pieces....

Should I put a mirror up guys and turn lights on??

Well, I threw the lights on... Tangs went right for him..... I setup a mirror station on one side of the tank, and the tangs are pretty much over there, chasing there shadow...... The Sailfin lost interest in the regal, and the Kole comes over to the Regal now and then, flashes around him, then leaves... I think the aggression has stopped... Thank God....

The yellow belly Regal that I have had for three weeks, passed yesterday morning. This fish was eating from the first day I brought him home, and was eating like a pig until two days ago. Three days ago he had been a seemingly healthy, active, vibrant fish. The day before yesterday when I went to feed, the Regal was hiding in the rock work and didn't come out to eat. He wasn't in any apparent distress, except for the fact that he wouldn't come out of the rocks to eat. When I checked on the tank yesterday, he was dead.

Sorry to hear that. Must be frustrating and discouraging. Seems strange that the fish would die after eating well and apparently adapting. Regals are delicate and it just seems that everything has to be perfect from the point of collection to the time they reach the hobbyist. Any snafus along the way seem to doom these fish. The ironic thing is that once they have adapted and settled in they are as hardy as any fish.

One thing with finicky fish is having them around other fish to let them see them eat. Almost like a monkey see monkey do situation. This can be a two edged sword as aggressive eaters may hinder them from eating, but this is to be determined by the owner whom knows the tendencies of his other fish.

I prefer to not QT delicate fish as QT can in some cases stress them out more than really necessary and the risk outweighs the benefits, but this is just my perspective and it differs greatly with many others in this thread so take what you want from it.

I really do however believe if he sees other fish taking prepared foods with gusto it will really help. As said it may never learn to eat from the water column prepared foods, but being around others that do may illicit that particular feeding response.

I personally believe its time to pull him from QT and give it a shot before he starves to death in QT.

Two other notes.....

Do you have sponge laden live rock? I would pull some from the rockwork and check the undersides in areas where there was no light. I am willing to be their may be some sponge in your tank he can eat if your tank is a well matured tank.

Other note....Nix the garlic if he isn't taking it already.

I had put some live rock in there with some sponge. As of 3 days ago, he started picking at that. I have been putting in angelfish formula with sponge in it regularly with mysis as well. Yesterday he started eating that too! Yeah! I hope he begins to fill out some. You can just notice him starting to thin a bit, but now he's eating pretty well, today too.
After the horrible delivery incident with this guy I fully didn't expect him to make it this far. It's more than 2 weeks now. He had a small infection on his pectoral fins where he'd been trapped by the colapsed and near empty shipping bag. I put in some Melafix 2 days ago, and it's nearly gone now.
I want to put a picture of him on this thread. How do you paste one in? I have it in my gallery.

I just received mine. I gotten it from Mike @ NY Aquatic. He is doing great so far not really eating the Angel food and mysis or spirlina I am feeding yet. But i have a ton of sponges in my tank. He is getting along GREAT with everyone so that should help him not worring about any stress from anyone. So I have gotten my copperbanded to eat mysis on a regular basis also my Moorish idol to eat like a pig. I am hoping he does well now also
