Regal Angel Primer

My service guy packed the fish in buckets, with no heat... 3-4 hours later, all the fish were cold, and dazed... :( He totally dropped the ball.. Should have been bagged, and in styro...

Sadly,
My regal died in my tank move this Monday... Lost 10 fish... Regal and Lineatus were 2 that died that are really upsetting me... Anyhow, I have a new regal sitting in a drip right now.... Doesn't look to have the colors of my last one, but he is a yellow belly......

Who did you buy from as I'm getting the run around. I finally got the b@## to buy one and I'm getting the shaft.

My understanding is fish from reputable collectors in the Red Sea are hard to get these days due to everything going on in the area and along with more and more red tape.

Here's a pic I took of one of my Butterflies and my Vanuatu Regal Angel in the back. The Angel was finally put into the display tank a couple of weeks ago and is doing great.

A followup to my posts regarding my Regal Angel that I purchased in July of last year.

I'm happy to say this fish is nice and healthy. It has filled out nicely and, while still sometimes shy, eats very, very well. As I posted when I originally bought the fish, it was picking at the fish store.

It's a Pacific Regal Angel. Honestly, the feedback I've been getting from several LFS is that the collecting techniques are slowly changing for the better.

BTW... I feed my fish primarily pellets, which *all* eat readily.

Finally... the tank that this fish is housed is a peaceful tank. There are no aggressive members of the community so this may be part of the success I've had.

I would like to add a Regal angel if the experts have a rough concesus. It loooks like it's more of a 50/50 chance from what I've gathered though. I am currently growing out my SPS dominated reef after a recent crash. I do have quite a few zoas, which I wont cry if the emperor or regal eats. (they get in the way of my SPS anyways)

Current Stocking list in 240G display tank:
-Emperor Angel
-Sailfin Tang
-Hippo Tang
-Purple Tang
-Copperband Butterfly
-Clarkii Clownfish x 2
-Watchman goby - pink
-chromis x 2 (blue and a green)
-zoas, shrooms, frogspawn

IME Regals need a peaceful tank to start eating. If they feel any aggression directed to them, they can be reluctant to feed.

I Had My 3.5 Inch Regal in my 240 with a 7 inch Majestic Angel with no issues, BUT I put the Majestic in after the Regal was well established.

...................and when they are placed in a peaceful tank its possible for them to become pretty aggressive, not complaining though as its still eating and healthy, but definitely the tank boss, even with a Sohal for a short while...

I've been following this thread for awhile now, and need some advice.

I received a regal Sat. morning (ordered online) and acclimated using the drip method over a couple hours. I noticed the Regal was breathing a little heavy but figured it was most likely due to shipping stress. Once I placed the Regal in my QT tank, it was very active and found shelter in a PVC elbow pipe. I waited a few hours with the lights off and offered a clam on the half shell which it immediately started to eat. Everything was looking great despite the heavy breathing.

Sunday morning, I take a look and the Regal is now laying on it's side breathing a lot faster than it was on Sat. After testing my water (using Salifert test kits) all the levels turned up perfect, I decided to treat with Prazi-pro since dealing with angels in the past I've noticed them to be more prone to gill flukes.

Last night it was still laying on it's side and I expected the worse in the morning. However, when I looked today it was swimming around and looking much better despite the heavy breathing. I can't figure out what it could be, possibly flukes and the Prazi-pro has started to work?

My QT is a 30G long, with 20 lbs of mature (4+ years), sponge filled live rock from my display sump. I have also placed a 3" PVC elbow in the tank for shelter. The QT has been running for 8 weeks and I took a sponge from the sump and placed in my Qt filter which I have always done in the past. Using Salifert test kits all parameters are in-line (PH, Nitrate, Nitrite, Ammonia, Alk), the temp is at 77 and the SG at 1.020.

Any advice? I've been in the hobby for years now and am really stumped by this one.

Thanks for the response Michael,

I didn't see any visible flukes, I was trying to look at the color of the gills but it was hard to see yesterday.

I thought low oxygen as well, so I added a MJ900 with the venturi to pump more air in there, but I'm not sure that is the reason.

Any other ideas? It really is strange, I can't seem to pinpoint a main cause.

Whats the pH in your QT?

Does the temp swing? I found out all my past failures with QT are normally contributed with temp swings......in my QT there aren't enough things producing heat (skimmers, powerheads, lights, so the ambient temp has a tendency to be a bear.

The PH is 8.2. and the temp does swing but only between 76.4 & 77.0, which is similiar to the flucuation in my display tank.

I would like to know what's causing the rapid breathing, yesterday it was on it's side almost the entire day, but today is very active and looks normal, despite the rapid gill movement.

I am going to offer a clam on the half shell again tonight to see if it will eat. I did not do this yesterday because of the condition it was in.

My regal leaves my RBTA and corals alone. He only eats from my hand. :fun4: Really, he loves eating from my hand. I have a video of him tearing pieces of clam from my fingers. I am unsure whether to post it. I don't want to give the impression that these fish are easy. They are not. I made sure he is the king of the tank. He can have whatever he wants: Rare corals, caviar, whatever. Just put it in the request form, Mr. Regal. I will remove all my fish before him.
