Regal Angel Primer

Quick question. Whats the survival rate for regal angels around 2 inches? LFS got some really small juveniles, and seriously thinking about it.
Edit to add that its from the Philippines. Should I be worried about that (cyanide, survivability). Thanks

Personally, I wouldn't buy it until it was eating at the LFS

Like Albano said make sure it is eating and 2" is a great size. Stay away from the 1"

I went ahead and bought the Regal Angel. Looks closer to 1.75inch (at most) rather than 2. Saw this particular one try to gulp a live blackworm but wasn't able to. Good enough evidence for me. Plus price was to good to be true. $40. For you NY guys they still have about 4 more at the Westbury NY fish store (dont want to name the place as it might be a no no around here). Some more lively than others.
Here is my new favorite fish in a 5g quarantine. I have a slightly larger quarantine but since I didnt fresh water dip this guy (I always do) this would have to do until he gets plump enough for a dip.

Edit to add that the live rock in there with him has tons of life such as tube worms, pods, algae, etc. I even threw in a sponge. Seen him pick mysis but doesn't seem to swallow a whole lot yet.

Nanighan, congratulations on your new Regal! Beautiful fish. I'm happy to say that mine has doubled or even tripled in size since I got him. He was about the size of a US quarter and I saw him take interest in mysis at the LFS. It only took him a day to start eating in my QT. He is now a pig and will eat just about anything I put in the tank.

yes, he gets fed Nori soaked in selcon, LRS reef frenzy, PE mysis, and live black worms. I feed a mix of these foods daily. I'm actually a little surprised at how quickly he has grown.

Your angel looks super healthy! Mine is going in a sps tank like yours. Do you have a build thread. That pic shows some nice size colonies.

Thank you! Mine hasn't touched a coral yet. I do not have a build thread but I'm planning on starting one soon. My tank and corals are still relatively young, at about 2 years old.

Cfloor - how big is ur regal now? I have a Red Sea that eatsike a pig. I've had him 8 months and he's grown about a half inch I'd say. He's now 4.5 inches. Do you think that getting them to grow is totally dependent on getting one that eats very well?

Mine seems like a slow grower but if he grows to 7 or 8 inches and it takes 6 years, I'd be very happy. I'm just wondering if I've got no shot at this happening. Everyone seems to tell me that they just won't grow that large in captivity

I've the joined the ranks, actually this is the second time around......lost my first one to an overly aggressive goldlfake.

The goldflake is gone (unfortunately) so time for another try.

I'm a little concerned that he/she appears a little thin. However he/she has been eating healthly and upon entering the display that hasn't changed. Feeding on hikari mysis as well as pe mysis.

It's interesting that it doesn't eat as well when the my circulation pump is not running. Seems to prefer to have to chase or have the food swirling around.

Also my other regal like to hide this one on the other hand is always out and about. Probably because of the goldflake. Not camera or person shy at all, as you can see:)

Also I know it's a yellow belly Regal but is there truly any way to really tell it it's from the Red Sea?

Thanks

Beautiful fish enjoy, the part about being friendly is sometimes why they get caught. I have two fish that never swim away from me, they just stay put till I feed

Hi,

I got this yellow belly Regal angelfish a couple of days ago and it is heathy.

Today is day 5 in my DT and she is not eating, just picking on the live rocks.

Put some clam (on shell) and raw shrimp today, she will look at it but will not touch it.

I already tried all kinds of frozen food and she will swim faster but still not eating.

Any suggestions?

This is a fish that belongs in QT until you can get it to eat.
Hopefully it works out for you...here is advice from Live Aquaria :

To entice a Regal Angelfish to eat, use a diet of fresh shrimp and chopped seafood. The diet should also include herbivore preparations which include Spirulina and marine algae, and angelfish preparations containing sponges.
