Regal Angel Primer

How many of your regals are mixed reef safe?

I have 2 Pacific blue belly regal angels from the Philippine (both 3") and 2 Indian Ocean yellow bellies from Sumatra (3" & 3.5") in mixed reefs. (My other two regals don't count here.)

All are SPS safe, but some nipping has to be expected. It's usually when they go after some bites of food the polyps caught.
So far they also don't do too much damage to the few smaller LPS I have (Acans, brain coral, blastomussa, dendros,...).
They have no interest in mushrooms or anemones.
Green star polyps are ignored.
Paleys get harassed and nipped on the tentacles, but so far that's all.
Zoas in reach get heavily munched on
I don't have soft corals now but my past regals liked to nip at all of them and ultimately killed some.

I also find a high individuality in what my regals go after or not. Each of them has its own quirk.

Mine loves my Yellow Leather Coral so much so I had to remove it. It also took a liking to one of my large open brains so it had to be removed. SPS are fine as are many of my LPS and rics. If I put something in it likes to eat, I take it out and find something it does not. Small price to pay for such a beautiful fish.

Mine has eaten most of the zoas that were in my tank but it has reduced from absolutely demolition of them to just occasionally picking at them, this also coninsided with it starting to eat pellets. But I knew that was a possibility and I would rather the fish than zoas.
It hasn't even looked like touching any of the hammers and torches or sps.

I'm adding myself to the "Regal Owners List" - however I'm seemingly having some feeding problems myself.

Tank: 240 gallon, minimal rockwork

Inhabitants: only the Regal (thinking of adding a few dither chromis to promote feeding)

parameters: 80F, zero 'ite, zero NH3. <20PPM 'ate.

Regal size: ~5"

Date of addition: 02.05.16

General health: Good. active swimmer, roaming around upper 25% of tank primarily.

Notes: surface skimming heavily, and shoots water. he appears to be trying to skim proteins off of the surface

Things I've tried:
• clams (garlic'ed and non)
• oysters (garlic'ed and non)
• Rods Complete Reef
• some red stringy seaweed offered by LFS, forget name
• Live brine

Things yet to try, but soon will:
• Red, purple, green seaweed
• Angelixir on food

Any additional recommendations? I've read through the bulk of this thread (which needs a takeaway key-points list!) as well as every other online source I can find. I know I'm not at a critical point yet given it is only coming up on a week, but would love to promote a feeding response sooner rather than later.

PS - photo evidence. :)

That sounds strange. All regals I had preferred to stay rather near the bottom, or if going up do it under the cover of rocks.
They were also all not overly restless swimmers.

Argh! no adult sites, I promise! Just searched a free image hosting site, haha.

I hear you on the hiding - it is confusing me too. There have been threads in the archives of a Regal or two skimming the surface, but this is the only thing I could find. It appears as if he is attempting to eat particulate right at the waters edge, but I'm not certain of this.

I was worried initially that it may be due to ammonia burn on the gills, but he has continued the action. Not sure here.

He does swim along slowly and deliberately, not trying to run laps around the tank. Additionally, he is at the surface both vertically and horizontally, allegedly trying to skim using both tactics. Occasionally he'll shoot water out of his mouth...

No one taught this guy manners, apparently.

I had one that spit water at me if I did not feed him fast enough. He was suppose to be 3" came in almost twice that size, but ate like a pig and went to someone else's good home

Colton, Keep an eye on your water quality. I've had mine drop quickly when too much uneaten food went unnoticed. An air stone may help increase oxygen levels if gills got damaged. Best of luck.

Let's try this again. I got the size I wanted last time but the poor fish had its fate sealed prior to me accepting delivery. This guy is every bit of 6". Stunning. Stunning. Stunning.

how is this replacement doing for you daveraz?

coltonmeng, some fish will gulp air and then blow it out their gills. certain fish seem to do it just for "fun", but it can also mean low oxygen in the tank or to relieve symptoms of parasites/worms inside the gills.

He is very cryptic still after three week. He hangs out under the reef, most of the bottom of my tank is a cavern made with shelves. He runs off the whitetail bristle tooth and the two wrasses don't benture near him. He is the king. Not eating much, nibbleing here and there. Im not confident he will make it. He never ever leaves the bottom but swims around quite a but under there. Gets cleaned from the blood shrimp often and picks at the underside of the shelf rocks and eats food from the bottom that gets swept to the back corner from the power heads. I'll attach a pic of his home but he's not very photogenic. Lmao nit the best pics, only ones I have on the iPad.

thanks for the update. seems to be on par with most regal experiences from nyaquatic, unfortunately. hopefully something turns around and this one yields good fortune for your tank. keep us posted!

here's one of my red sea misbars begging and gobbling up some yummy LRS. qt is great as you get to build a bond with the fish and association with food much easier. such wonderful personalities.
