Regal Angel Primer

I feed several time today just a tiny amount but I did not see him eat. I am going to make a large water change.

Regal came in today super fat which is a relief! Slightly bigger than then the 3-4" listing though but that's ok. I put it through a quick formalin dip and into the QT. I offered some frozen and it investigated but didn't bite. I rubbed some mastic into the live rock to hopefully get it to graze. I'll let it be for now since I am sure it was a long 24 hours for her (my assumption since the spine is small or it's just too young to tell since it has a bar still not connected).

Finally added the regal to the display. He has been eating everything in QT including pellets aggressively! I pulled all my rocks out and the purple tang, redid the scape, added the regal and others from QT and then 30 min later added back the tang. So far the regal has just been hiding behind the rocks and the purple has been cruising around completely ignoring the regal. I'd say that the purple is about half the size and shown zero aggression thus far. While in QT the regal was in with a pintail wrasse and salon wrasse and was always out swimming the tank. Question for everyone is is this normal for him to hide for the last near two hours while all the other fish are out? It's entirely possible that I am just being paranoid but it also is my first regal experience and I am aware they are fairly shy. Alarm bells won't go off for me for at least a few days so just looking for others experiences when adding to the tank.

Thanks!

Wow, what a beautiful fish!

Keep us posted on the Regal and also how the Purple Tang and Regal get along, etc.

Thanks! He's found a spot behind the rocks and is back hanging out there since his few minutes of exploring. Hopefully in the next few days he gets more comfortable. I got accustomed to him being constantly out in QT haha. The purple tang still is basically ignoring him so I think the aquascape change definitely worked. He has been with me about a year now and I was concerned about aggression.

Just remember, Regals NEED a place to hide and feel safe.

If not, their health suffers.

The more places the better.

Again, beautiful fish!

Yup! I just got used to him being out of hiding and being pretty bold in QT so it's just a 180 behavior wise. I know they tend to be shy so that's why I was asking if what he was doing was normal based on others experiences or if it warranted cause for concern. I'm just probably being a paranoid regal noob lol

This video shows the only brave regal I ever bought, too bad it did not work out with me trying to pair with another. Some customer at one of my favorite fish stores got a real nice regal. The regal would spit water if I did not feed him just like a trigger fish I had once. (click on picture)

Of my 5 regals only the little Bali one is truly fearless and always out. All the others are more careful and always ready to dart into the rocks. Of my Sumatra pair the female is more bold and outgoing.

As for them to disappear at times, that's quite normal as well. Most of my guys are in their sleeping caves at least half an hour before the light goes out.

Cool. That's reassuring that this is typical. He has been a bit more bold today and shifted his spot so he is looking out of the cave. He nabbed a few pieces of food that came his way as well.

Just picked up my first rs regal, he was eating brine shrimp at the store. I have him in my 57 gallon qt currently under cupramine .25 and prazipro (i know don't judge :) ). I had a clear divider in the tank for one day because I was concerned how the emperor would treat him, so far he doesn't care for the regal.

I am hoping he will start eating nls pellets and nori soon.

Why do you have so many fish in QT at one time?

And what do you mean by "so far he doesn't care for the regal."?

How are you controlling the ammonia levels? Nice pickup by the way

There is an internal fluval filter with bio media and foam, and also the real reef rock that is in the tank provides the bacteria to remove ammonia. The real reef rock does not have any critters in it, just beneficial bacteria.

After going 1,5 months in QT my Regal has been in a sectioned off part of my tank so that my adult Powder blue gets used to him. He has been there for two weeks and will likely remain for another two before I open the sectioned part.

My question would be regarding LPS: he only eats pellets (like a pig) but I do have acans, lobos, and a large elegance coral on the other side. Should I remove these before allowing the regal in?
