Regal Angel Primer

Day 4 of TTM is now complete. Fish are resting comfortably in their new bucket. Unfortunately, I did not have a second small heater on hand, so I had to borrow the larger one from the display to keep in warm until Petsmart opens so I can go get another small one.

Just be careful with that big heater in such a small volume of water. They can overheat really fast. I don't trust any heater on my TTM tubs. I put them on a ranco. Since I'm too cheap to buy 2 rancos, I put the probe in a bag filled with fresh water and then put that in the TTM tub so I can just use a new bag for every transfer. Makes me sleep a lot easier to not have to be worried about the heater killing my fish.

I have switched the heater out now for a "2 gallon" heater. I plan to return it when I am done (no more fish will be going into this system).

The Regal does not appear to be enjoying his new small home. He went from a 20L to a 5 gallon bucket. In the 20, he had a small heater and a powerhead. Now he's got a (new) small heater and an air tube.

He keeps biting the surface where the air bubbles are, i'm not sure if he's low on oxygen (not sure why he would be) or if the increase in temp (the thermometer reads 78) is bothering him. Will keep an eye on him and see what we can do. I unplugged the heater for now to cool it back down for him.

Biting the surface usually means not very much oxygen.. Is there anything else you can do to increase the oxygen levels in the bucket? Power head breaking the surface of the water?

There is quite a bit of movement on the surface, but I do believe I have a small powerhead that's clean nearby.

Just a suggestion. A video would help. He may just be stressed out a little bit.

I find that changing the environment that much, from a 20l to a bucket doesn't usually make the fish too happy. That's why when I TTM from the bag, I start in a 5g bucket. Just a suggestion.

Here it is - not very good. He hangs out under the heater the whole time. The heater is off and temps are reading around 73. Seems to like it colder. In the video, it starts with air bubbles and power head, then I turn power head off so you can see flow, and finally turn it back on.

I don't want him to be blown around for the next 3 days.

Both fishes seem to be taking the extra flow just fine - perhaps the air bubbler just wasn't putting enough air all around the bucket.

How long has this fish been in a 5 gallon bucket - and how much longer do you plan on keeping it in a 5 gallon bucket?

So he plans on keeping this fish in, and moving this fish from a 5 gallon bucket to a 5 gallon bucket, for 12 days?

Nope. If you read above, he started in a 20 long, and after the 5 gallon bucket for 3 days, he's going back to the 20l, and then to a 29. Even if he was just doing buckets, it wouldn't be a problem. For a 5-6" mature regal, yeah a 5g bucket isn't acceptable. But for a juvi 3" one... It'll do.

A 5 gallon bucket is 10.25" at the bottom...

And sorry, not to be rude... but this isn't an "It'll do" hobby - these are animals - not stamps.

Exactly. And if you feel he should be in bigger, I can move him back to the clean 20L tomorrow - and then wait 3 days and move him into the 29......that may not be a bad idea.

If I go clean my 29G right now with white vinegar and water, how long does it have to dry before he can be moved in there? And what will that do to my TTM process in the meantime?

Hey man, no offense taken. I love my fish as my pets, and I'm heartbroken if they die(it's been almost a year since that happened).
But I stand by my point, a 5g bucket is perfectly fine for TTM.
