Regal Angel Primer

been following this thread for a while now. can you guys post with how long you've had you regals? I've seen a lot of new aquisitions just wondering how many are still doing well.

thanks

Kirk

Thanks. Hope he starts eating soon. Hope your fellas do the same. Keep us updated on your current fishes.

Steve

I moved my female to the 46 gallon temporarily a while ago. I wanted to focus on the new guy because the female is doing awesome at this point(knock on wood)

Szwab

I got my female around 6 months ago.

Szwab

Just 6 weeks for mine. One of the gang now, but it took a lot longer than any other fish I have had. Having got past the introductory hurdles, the next ten years will be the real test.

Steve

yeah I've got the itch. They are my favorite fish along with pseudochromis fridmanis. I've just been waiting for the right one. I'm sure i'll know when I see it

Do they eat star polyps? My tank is overrun with them? What corals do they eat?

No they won't but mine likes to have a bite of pulsing xenia now and then. Not enough to keep them from growing and spreading though.

Going on 7 months now with mine. :D

Deep depression is slowly setting in.

No real appetite or eating for my male regal. He takes in food, shakes his head violently and spits it out! No luck with live brine, frozen mysis, frozen formula 1, prime reef, hikari angel formula, flakes, pellets...did I leave anything out?

He also has couple of lesions on tail and dorsal fin. The water tests perfect.

Anybody with suggestions??

Only way I cheer myself is looking at my female who is just a pig(outeats everything in the tank)

You could try oyster on a half shell. Mine will also take frozen cubes of krill (thawed of course).

That's sad to hear. I hope he turns around.

The suggestion of clam on the half-shell is a good one. I'd also try one of the green or red macroalgae products (SeaWeed Selects is my choice) on a clip or rolled up and attached to a rock by rubberband.

.....

Two days is too early to start panicking. If it is trying to eat you probably just have to find the right food. The big worry is when you get one that is not interested in even trying to eat, as per the only other one I ever had, several years ago.

Mine likes to pig out on frozen cabbage leaf and green nori. Not so keen on red nori but still eats it. Freshly opened mussel/clam (and probably any other shellfish you can get hold of) is another favourite.

Cabbage and mussel are the two things guaranteed to get the Blue Tang and the Regal eating side by side. The Regal because it likes them so much it is prepared to risk getting along side the Blue Tang, and the Blue Tang because it likes them so much it can't be bothered taking time out to chase the Regal.

Steve

Henry,

Sorry to hear that . I am considering getting clam on the half shell for my CBB. It grazes on the LR all day, but doesnt even look at mysis shrimp w/ garlic.

I am not panicking just yet as it is only day 3 of all my fish in my tank. Once a week comes by and they (esp, the CBB and Blonde Naso) still arent, then I will start to get worried.

Kirk

Thanks guys for your suggestions.

Kirk, I guess you are not as pessimistic as I am. Thats a good thing!

I plan to cruise the seafood aisle of the supermarket tonight for some clams and oysters

Gscheimer : Is green dried nori from oriental market same as sea weed selects?

Henry,

Well, being in the IT industry you have to have patience, a sense of humor, and an optismistic view of everything. I leave the pessimistic attitude for my wife. :D

Yes, nori is the same as sea weed select and is alot cheaper too.

Let us know if the Regal accepts the clams.

It can be but I wouldn't fool around with the oriental market stuff at this point. Some of it is roasted and/or seasoned. You only need a small amount, so spend the $3.00 and make sure you get the good stuff. My Regal ONLY eats the red Seaweed Selects algae but I've heard of others eating the green variety. It won't eat the stuff from the oriental market. In fact, none of my fish like it.

I am happy to report that my regal is eating. Not vigorously but eating

It is eating mysis and live brine. I tried the clam and it was assaulted by evil coinhabitants of the tank(I will deal with them tonight under cover of darkness)

The regal couldnt even get to it.
I couldnt find the seaweed selects in any LFS(FYI CINCY stinks as far as reef shops go)I am planning to mail order asap.

Kirk

Perhaps my grim outlook is due to my work environment...or maybe Im just a pessimist!

My wife reminded me recently how I told her the first regal wasnt going to make it on a daily basis for the first couple weeks, and I have been wrong so far.

Greg

Thanks for your help. BTW has it been 10 years for your regal in your tank? I read your article that was written 3 years ago that your regal was 7 years in captivity.

In any case, that is an incredible achievement, and I as well as all other regal owners would love to hear more of your observation and insight.

Can you recall how big it was when you bought it and what size is it now? Trying to get a sense of the growth rate.

Have you always had it in a big(400plus) tank or did you start out smaller tank.

Final question, what food do you feed it(other than red sea weed select?)

Thanks

It has been 10 years for the Regal in my 500 gallon reef. It started life as a 2 1/2 inch fish in a 20 gallon reef aquarium and graduated to the 500 gallon reef in 1997. It's grown to 5 1/2 inches.

I also have another Regal for the past 3 years in a 40 gallon reef tank. It's grown from 2 1/2 inches to 4 inches.

In addition to the red Seaweed Selects, I feed a spongy vegetable-based food called Pro-V. The Regals really like this and I think it's because of the spongy consistency, which holds up under water. I break off a chunk of frozen Pro-V and put it in a suction-cup clip. I also feed a mix of mysis shrimp, krill, and brine shrimp plus (Ocean Nutrition frozen food). The Regal in the 40 gallon reef also eats flakes and pellet food, which is very unusual, but I don't feed these very often.

The key is to make sure that the Regal is the king of the aquarium and that it gets enough food every day.

Good luck with yours!

Greg

Henry,

Good News!!! Glad your Regal is eating.

My fish are starting to pick at some food. I fed them Frozen Formula 2 with garlic and I saw the flame angel eat some, and the naso tang took one bit of food passing in the water column. They seem more interested in this food, then the mysis shrimp or Formula 2-angelfish food.

Individual fish personality must make a huge difference as well.

When I put my Regal in a tank with a very large Blue Tang (4 x mass of regal) I did so knowing that the tang was a pretty laid back sort of fish and had never chased anything else. This however changed with the Regal, as it started to chase it nearly every time it came out in front of the reef and at one point I was thinking of taking the tang out. Before it got to this, however, it became quite apparent that the Regal was not planning on letting being chased cramp its style and was starting to come out front with the rest at feeding time. As time went past it got bolder and even slightly cheeky. At one point I saw it following the Blue Tang down the tank, only to peel off as soon as the tang started to turn at the end.

It was not as good as the others at chasing food, so for the first few weeks I also put food down the back of the reef for it. It also helped that the tang had little interest in chasing the Regal during feeding time.

I have now stopped this extra feeding as the Regal has pretty much mastered the art of running down food and is now fully part of the large ball of fish (which includes the Blue Tang) milling round my hand at feeding time. The chasing has become sort of an occasional token gesture but the Regal still avoids bumping into the tang right out in the centre front of the tank.
