Regal Angel (Pygoplites diacanthus)

Do you guys think a Regal Angel would be OK in a 75 gallon reef for about 1-2 years until I upgrade? As I said the tank is a reef with plenty life growing on the LR including ample sponge. The only other tank mates would be a Coral Beauty and a Yellow Tang. Thanks guys!

I had my Regal in a 50 gallon while acclimating to aquarium life and he was fine and have now moved him to my 120g, so yes I think you would be ok with a 75g.

Actually he did not eat in the store when I asked them to feed him but he was a really nice looking specimem and I got a great deal on him. The funny thing is that as soon as I put him in my 50g he ate mysis that night and for a roommate he had a Juvi Imperator Angel which I think are pretty aggressive but my Regal held his own.

Here's a pic of him in my 50

And here now in my 120

I have had 3 previously of which were of the Red Sea variant and did not have very good luck unfortunately. Definitely a very tough species but I tend to flock to those type of fish. Anyway he eats everything and anything that I feed.

Good Luck with your choice!

I just got a new Red Sea Regal angel on Friday. The regal angel is housed with a Juv Emperor Angel that is half his size. Still he's chasing the regal and being a bully. He wasn't eating in the quarantine. After 3 days, I moved him to my 120g DT. Tried feeding him everything, he's not interested. I am worried. Not sure how long they can last without eating.

Live blackworms from your state have done the trick for my CBB. I have o experience with the Regal, but the live blackworms have a great deal of essential oils and they wiggle like crazy when they hit the saltwater. My CBB is gaining alot of girth in the belly now!

Aquaticfoods.com. They ship overnight. You could have them by Thurs. It would cost you less than $40 for 3/4lb and freezing may work. I am trying to freeze my surplus. Get some "wormkeepers" as well.

Search the topic blackworms or Copperband Butterfly and you will find a wealth of information from Paul about fish nutrition, blackworms etc..

Hope the Regal will start eating.

Mine is in a 55 gallon qt at the moment but was in my 125. He doesnt look two big for the 55. Plus mine has been a slow grower. Mine got along with my 7" yellow tang. Dont expect him to be to friendly to that coral beauty.heres some pics to make you want one even more :)

He eats mysis, spirulina brine, nori, scallops, clams, and finally formula 2 medium pellets.

Yes......check out "copps" tank of the month

Eho......try live clams or oysters......it will take some time

Yes and I have had really good luck with it for fish that won't eat. Have used on Flavo Anthias, my Blue Line Anglefish and others. It never hurts to have a good mix of foods for the tough ones!

I don't think the size of the tank is an immediate issue. In my experience the challenge you will have is the yellow tang will severly harrass the regal further complicating getting him to eat. If it were me I would take out the yellow tang for a while. Or QT the regal until he is eating good and strong enough to survive the harrassment he will almost certinly recieve.

I think that you will be fine, provided you get a specimen that is well acclimated to aquarium life. If the fish is eating well, then I think that you will be fine. If the fish will not eat prepared foods, then a larger tank would be ideal to provide a larger source of natural food.

I kept my Red Sea Regal in my 55 gallon along with a Flame Angel, Potters Angel, Bellus Angel and Mitratus Butterfly. No Aggression and the fish were extremely healthy until my heater fried the tank.

Good luck if you decide to go through with this amazing fish.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

GreshamH-Good to know I had always heard they were too small for fish.

Micheal-Beautiful Regal, sorry about the heater accident.
