Regal Angel Question

So I bought a Regal Angel from a NY store that claims they sell ones eating mysis. Surprise it wasnt so after a week of it not eating mysis I am forced to seek other alternatives.

I am trying the clam on the half shell route. HArd to find clams on the half shell. The angel does pick at them though which is encouraging. However when I drop the clam to the bottom every snail and crab I have flock all over it. I think this keeps the Regal from getting more. Suggestions?

Second how do I go about switching him to other food sources?

..........Same thing happened with mine.......give it some time and continue to feed him clams and mussels (it is a great sign that he picks at it:). The next step, chop the clams up, mix them with different foods such as mysis...krill.....etc. Feed in the column, but continue to feed on the clams w/ shells.
This worked for me.........as of now, mine eats anything I throw in the tank!
Good luck!!

I'm going through the same thing and got mine from the same place. I have him in QT and been giving him clams on the half shell. The first clam he completely devoured but hasn't finished the others I put in. I have tried brine, mysis angel formula, NLS pellets but won't touch anything. I am starting to get nervous.

I get like 50 clams for like 10 bucks at Shoprite. Cut them in half, and both sides have meat so I get 100 shells... Try Marine 2 Frozen cubes or Veggie Bites... They look like little green cubes and break up into small bits of green veggies. My regal loves both...

I have my Regal for 6 months now, and he still doesn't eat frozen foods.. Now and then he may pick at some... But he tears apart anything green and clams....

Like stated above try the clams and the anything else route. They are tough by nature, but given good water quality, calm environment they can come around.

If it is the same place I'm thinking I got one also. But it did not come in well, never ate and died in days. Also told it was eating mysis. Last time I go there.

Here is my two cents and if you try this..it's VERY possible that your regal will be eating by the end of the week. oh wait, it is the end of the week..lol...
anyway, when I bought mine at LFS it was eating pellets, when I took him home all it ate was pellets but never any frozen like all my other fish. So I had read that most if not all Angels need sponges in their diet as they eat that in the wild. So someone recommended Angel Formula and I got some last weekend and I feed that and my Regal angel is loving it...it has the gel binder so I recommend that after you soak it and let it dethaw, I suggest you mash it before feeding it, especially if you have a small regal. I can almost guarantee that your Regal will love the stuff. Keep us updated on the progress of your little guy.

Thanks for the responses.

What about dropping the clams on the bottom and all my snails going nuts. Does anyone place theirs higher in the tank??

I have some of the formula OC for Angels. I will try mashing it up and target feeding.

He doesnt seem interested in nori. Do you think adding a yellow or kole tang would help him with the clip???

Try taking a square of nori and ruberband it around a rock or small piece of pvc pipe and let it drop down to the substrate. Mine started eating it that way 2 weeks ago .

Mine died last night, didn't even last two weeks. Last time I order from that place.

Steve - where did you get yours from, I live in Jersey and haven't seen a Red Sea at any LFS.

cmart28: If your LFS orders from Quality Marine just have them order it for you. Same place LiveAquaria gets their fish.

Thanks, LA I will check with them. I haven't lost a fish in ages and to lose one that beautiful is very discouraging.

I've always been amused by the "All our Regals are eating" claim. Really? You must be the luckiest lfs in the world since 50 % - 75% of Regals don't eat.

IMO, it's worth it to get it from an LFS, that way you can visual see if indeed the Regal is eating or not.

Also, you might find a deal. Our little Juvi Red Sea was only 27% the cost of RFH.

Do you have a grocery store that sells live clams? The freshness may be more appealing to him.
