Regal blue tang in a 55 gallon aquarium short term?

Hi, an extremely experienced local reefer is trying to find a larger aquarium for his 3" hippo tang, it is currently in his 30 gallon aquarium with a TUNE of coral. I'm thinking really hard on this one. I wouldn't need to quarantine it which is a HUGE plus! it's extremely healthy and eats anything he puts in the tank, he said it would be fine in my tank for about 1 1/2 years, do you think that's about right?

I currently have a pair of ocellaris clowns a YWG and a melanurus wrasse, do you think they would get along with the tang? everywhere I've read it says they would. Hopefully I will have a bigger aquarium by the time it needs one, and if not I will give it to my LFS, or someone in my aquarium club.

What are your thoughts on this?

Thank you,
Ethan

Extremely experienced reefer has a blue hepatus in a 30 gallon? Something doesn't add up.

I wouldn't. LFS or aquarium club is a much better idea. Your fish will terrorize the crap out of that tang.

Agreed. A 55 gallon tank is not an improvement for this fish.

What do you mean by hepatus in a 30 gallon? Something doesn't add up?

Before he bought it he was planing to find it a new home when it gets to big,
It is already in a tank with 2 clowns and a shrimp goby and a leopard wrasse and they all get along wonderfully, so why would my fish terrorize it?

Thanks.

Choose fish based on the tank you have, not the tank you hope to have.

a hepatus is a regal blue tang and he meant if he was an experienced reefer it would never have been in a 30g tank

It's a shame though that most of us can't house these fish properly. Bigger will always be better, but unfortunately that's not the case sometimes. If that fish was in a 20 gallon holding tank at the LFS, going to a 30 gallon tank is definitely a step in the right direction.

but a fish at the store in that holding tank is only there for 1-3 weeks until sold so unless the 30g is the same, not really a good example

What are your thoughts on this?

not ideal, the 55g; however, better than a 30g. i would say she would be ok for a year or two in the 55g with your light stock load, imo.

I don't think you read my post thoroughly. It's a shame that most of us out there can't house these fish properly. You can come up with whatever number you want, but in the end it probably won't be big enough. If it's not big enough, a 10 gallon tank is no different than a 100 gallon tank.

Btw, let's just hope it survives 1-3 weeks at the LFS. Plenty of horror stories there.

I completely agree, and that is why I said I HOPE to have a bigger aquarium by the time it needs one, but if not I would be more than willing to give it to someone at my aquarium club or give it to my LFS.

Ok, I'm still thinking about it as most people on here think it is a bad idea.

Any fish that is huge when fully grown is fine in a small tank as long as you know what you're going to do with it when it gets to big.

Lmao!!!

Dude I love tangs, got too many of them myself and at times disagree with the tang police here, but this statement isn't a good one: 20->30 gallons is a step in the right direction? Come on man... That fish definitely needs a tank bigger than a 30 or 55. Lol

My biggest question is if my 2 clowns YWG and melanurus wrasse would be aggressive towards the tang? or the opposite way around?

Almost can guarantee the clowns and the wrasse will be aggressive towards newcomers.

In time though, the hippo will become a total disaster. Once it's stressed out? I've heard stories of them killing fish with behavior similar to a sohal or clown tang.
