Relocating an established DSB

Hi all

My DSB about 15-20cm deep in my fuge and has been running for about a year now.

I realise that disturbing an established DSB could possibly raise serious issues, i.e. possibly releasing sulphide in the water. Is it at all possible to successfully move/relocate an established DSB? If so, how?

Or is it just a matter of taking a few scoops off the top, wash the rest and seed it after with the scoops taken before? If yes, what is a safe amount to take off the top layer to prevent releasing possible nasties in the tank water?

I assume you are moving it into another tank/sump? If so it would prob be best to take a few inches from the top and start all over. I would remove the sump from the tank system before starting though.

I have never don this or had a DSB, so this is just 'best guess' on my part.

I believe anything over 2" is anarobic (sp). So take 1" or so off should be safe. Than what you describes is right, rinse the rest and put the scopped off (which you kept in a buket of SW) back on top and you should be gtg.
