Old School Reefer
I'm looking forward to gathering with you all tomorrow at St Jude (one of the coolest places in town!) to tour the incredible reef tanks there, plus some of the hospital and research facilities! Richard R. from Memfish will take us behind the scenes and show us how they handle such big tanks... he and his staff put in long hours to keep those tanks looking great! Barrett S. (former WTMRAC pres and one of the key players in getting the tank established) will be on hand to give us some of the history behind making the 800 gallon reef tank a reality. We've got at least 20 attendees already signed up... last minute attendees are of course welcomed.

Check the original thread (or your email) again for the meetup details. See you at TJ Mulligan's on Main St. at 5:30 pm!

I sure wish I could be there tomorrow to see the tanks...I donated all my spare time that summer that we installed the 800 gallon tank....I was there when it was delivered and I was there every minute I could be until the corals were added. I got used to wearing that hard hat to go into the construction site to get to the tank . I have vivid memories of some of the corals and a few of the fish that had unique personalities. I got attached to some of the kids I worked with in the chemo lab, on the days I was there working on the tanks, I stayed and worked with the kids too. It was a special summer full of great memories.
I still have my parking pass and my name tag and I have thought about going back just to see the tanks sometime when I am in town.

The tank is really great now. When i got my post-doctoral position in St.Jude, i checked this forum and found the story about the big tank. I thought i probably enjoy or took a rest in front of the tank. However, i visited the tank only one time during past two years. The tank is not for me but for the kids. Whenever i pass the tank, i think about the sweat of volunteers like you. Thank you very much!!!

I loved talking to the kids about the tanks outside the Chemo Lab ...Thier eyes would light up and they had a dozen questions. Going to help with the tanks was the highlight of my week , I had an issue with a hypo thyroid that caused me to run fevers and I had to stay off campus until the problem was resolved ...by that time Memfish had taken over the care of the tanks so I never went back before I moved south ., There were lots of volunteers for milestone occassions like coral installations and live sand additions but most of the time it was me and Barrett and Scott ( Scott built the 800 gallon tank ) Barrett worked on them way more than I did . St. Jude is an amazing place and I can say I saw it one time from inside that 800 gallon tank before the walls were erected around it ...not a lot of people can make that claim...lol

Very nice tour, we loved it. Sorry I didn't get time to talk to more people there, was in awe of the big tank..., :)
